Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling just got a new trailer before its premiere on August 9th. Can it live up to the original cartoon?

If you’re a 90s kid, Rocko’s Modern Life was an influential part of your childhood. Most of Nickelodeon’s 90s cartoons are ingrained into your psyche.

So when it came out at San Diego Comic Con in 2017 that Nickelodeon was going to revive the show (and Hey Arnold! and Invader Zim), we got a little excited. But then SDCC 2018 came and went, with little mention of our wallaby friend and suddenly it’s the middle of 2019 but at least we finally have some news.

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling got a brand new trailer and a premiere date, August 9th. Check it out below:

It looks exactly like it always did–at least humor-wise. The animation is crisper and cleaner and that probably shouldn’t come as a surprise since its original run ended twenty years ago.

Can it live up to the expectations that the original cartoon gave us?

From the quick glimpses we’ve gleaned from what’s been revealed so far, it’s looking like the show will be able to pull through on that gamble. It’s the same writers, the same voice cast, the same everything.

It’s still giving us a satirical look at society, albeit a little more blatant than when we were kids. And it looks like it’s grown up with us, flinging itself into the 21st century and trying to figure out what this train wreck is.

Look, I know I’m a little biased when it comes to Rocko. I’m still a little bitter that it was canceled back in 1996, as it was my favorite cartoon on Nickelodeon; I remember watching the very last episode when it aired. I still watch Rocko’s Modern Christmas every Christmas Eve.

I’ve been waiting for this to premiere since it was announced in 2017. If anyone has sky-high expectations for this, it’s me.

For better or for worse, we are at a point in our society where we want–and sometimes prefer–the nostalgia of our youth. Just like Rocko in the trailer; he just wants The Fatheads back on TV.
