Comic-Con@Home: The biggest moments from day one
Thursday marked the first official day of Comic-Con@Home, and there were plenty of exciting reveals, even with the virtual format this year.
This year is the first time San Diego Comic-Con has taken place virtually, but that doesn’t mean the show’s first day lacked the usual exciting reveals and announcements fans look forward to. The convention may have been less grandiose this year than in previous years, but it still held news of new projects in popular franchises, along with trailers and footage for upcoming films and shows.
There were plenty of interesting panels to enjoy on the first day of Comic-Con@Home, but the four biggest hinted at the future of franchises fans have come to love over the past few years. From new footage for highly anticipated shows and films to a new addition to the Star Trek family of series, Comic-Con@Home gave us a lot to talk about.
Here are the four most exciting reveals from day one.
Nickelodeon’s Star Trek Series
Although the Star Trek panels from Thursday didn’t give fans any trailers to obsess over, the franchise did have one surprise in store for virtual attendees: the news of a new animated series. Dubbed Star Trek: Prodigy, the series will live on Nickelodeon and feature a group of teens adventuring on a Starfleet.
This is all-new territory for the Star Trek franchise, as the focus on a younger group of characters will likely appeal to a new generation of fans. If all goes as planned, Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere in 2021 — giving fans just another piece of this world to look forward to.
His Dark Materials’ Second Season Trailer
HBO is planning to debut its second season of His Dark Materials later this year, so Comic-Con@Home was the perfect time to unveil its first full-length trailer — and that’s exactly what happened. The traielr dropped before a panel discussion with the show’s producers and cast, and it revealed a far more dangerous journey for Lyra and her friends going forward.
The panel also hinted at what’s to come for each major character, ramping up excitement for the second season, which is still on schedule to release later this year. (Finally, something to look forward to!)
The New Mutants’ Opening Scene
The New Mutants is slated to hit theaters next month after many, many delays over the past couple of years. Although fans have already seen numerous trailers for the upcoming film, the movie’s Comic-Con@Home panel gave them some new footage, revealing the opening moments of Mirage’s terrifying journey.
And judging by the first look, Mirage’s story begins just as ominously as her time at Dr. Cecilia Reyes’ secret facility for Mutants. While it’s hard to know exactly what’s happening in the first scene, it shows our leading lady being attacked by … something. And that seems to be what lands her among the other Mutants in the first place.
The panel didn’t suggest another delay, so it seems fans will get more context on this moment when The New Mutants arrives on August 28.
The Boys Gets Third Season
Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys also had its panel on Thursday, and showrunner Eric Kripke and the cast had some big news to share ahead of the show’s second-season premiere: It’s already been renewed for a third!
The group also revealed that a new after-show, entitled Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys, will air after season two. It seems this series is set to expand into something major — and honestly, we’re here for it.
