During HBO’s His Dark Materials panel at Comic-Con@Home, fans got to see the first footage of the show’s upcoming second season.

His Dark Materials was one of the big hits of HBO’s fall 2019 season, and fans have been patiently waiting for the second season of the show to arrive. The new episodes will be based on Philip Pullman’s The Subtle Knife, and they’ll see Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry journeying to new worlds — all while the threat of the Magisterium looms large.

The cast opened the panel with a surprise for fans: the trailer for the second season! The footage suggests a much darker journey for Lyra moving forward, with far more danger awaiting her and her friends as they unravel the mystery surrounding Dust.

Watch the first trailer for His Dark Materials season two here:

The trailer opens with a shot of Lyra in a new world, and she’s got a friend with her: Will! Fans get a few clips of these two before the footage shifts to the show’s villains, showing both Mrs. Coulter and Boreal. Everyone’s looking grim, which isn’t all that surprising after the failures of season one.

It wouldn’t be a His Dark Materials trailer without Lee Scoresby, who appears to be taking a beating over his promise to protect Lyra. During the panel, Lin-Manuel Miranda confirmed that his character’s journey centers around his relationship with the girl, so there are sure to be some interesting developments on that front.

The trailer also features a first look at Andrew Scott’s character, John Parry — yes, Will’s missing father. He looks as much an adventurer as Lee, and it’ll be interesting to see what his character has been up to all these years.

Overall, the trailer suggests the new episodes will raise the stakes and expand upon this world — all while making the series bleaker in the process. There’s no word on when we’ll see season two just yet, but it’s reportedly on track to debut later this year. We’ll be watching when it does!
