Batwoman: 5 questions we have heading into the show’s second season
With Batwoman’s first season over and done with, it’s time to start looking forward to what awaits us in season two. And we have some questions.
Well, it’s official: The CW’s Batwoman has one season in the books. And even if its first season was forced to end a bit earlier than planned, the episodes leading up to its impromtu finale began to bring together all the storylines that have been building since the series premiered — and threw a few wrenches into the plot, leaving readers with some serious questions to ponder heading into season two.
Unfortunately, the show’s second season won’t arrive until January 2021. It’s a longer wait than DC TV fans are used to, but it does give us time to theorize. And it gives the writers more time to piece together where they’re headed with the many storylines they’ve teased toward the end of season one.
So, what are the biggest questions Batwoman needs to answer when it does return?
Will Kate Ever Reveal Herself to Jacob?
The final episode of Batwoman‘s first season saw Kate coming to terms with the fact that Batwoman will always be her father’s enemy. But although she’s lost any hope of her father approving of her vigilante lifestyle, we’re not convinced she’ll be able to keep this secret from him forever.
For one, Jacob has outwardly declared war on Batwoman and anyone associated with her. With the Crows fighting against her, it’s probably only a matter of time before Kate’s captured — unless she pulls some Oliver Queen-esque antics to avoid suspicion.
If Jacob does discover who’s beneath the Batsuit, it’ll be interesting to see how he handles what his daughter has become. It’s possible he’ll surprise us, but … as of right now, things aren’t looking optimistic.
Is Alice Beyond Redemption?
“O, Mouse!” took a dark turn when Alice decided to kill the only real ally she had left. She’s been pushed further and further over the course of the series, with Jacob rejecting her and then Kate betraying her. After cutting ties to Mouse, it seems Alice will only get less human from here — and we have to wonder whether she’s putting herself beyond redemption.
Part of what makes Alice such an interesting villain is that she clearly does feel the emotions and compassion that many antagonists don’t, making her a character who isn’t totally black or white. As she lets go of everything she loves, however, it’s possible she’ll veer more toward being wholly evil. (Is it bad we’re still holding out hope that she’ll atone somehow?)
What Happens When “Bruce Wayne” Returns to Gotham?
The Batwoman finale ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, with Tommy Elliot taking on the face of Bruce Wayne. If his and Alice’s plans go off without a hitch, Tommy will use this new identity to infiltrate Wayne Tower and the Bat Team — and locate the last remaining bit of Kryptonite that’s hidden there.
The thing is, if Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham, does that mean we’ll see two bats running around fighting crime? It seems unlikely Tommy would be able to imitate Bruce to this extent, but one would think that Kate and Luke would expect him to jump back into action. And if he does, where does that leave Batwoman?
The return of this imposter Bruce Wayne is sure to shake things up in Gotham, and it’s unclear how the whole ruse is going to work. We’ll have to wait until season two to see how it unfolds, but right now, it seems like things are about to get … confusing.
What the Heck Is Going on With the Kryptonite?
Honestly, we’re still reeling from the reveal that Kryptonite is Batwoman’s weakness, and we have so many questions about where the show is headed with this storyline. For one, how exactly does Kryptonite serve as a weakness? We can assume it penetrates the Batsuit, but then, can’t Kate and her friends make a new, stronger Batsuit that will withstand it?
There’s also the possibility that the “weakness” is more complicated than that. With a crossover event featuring Batwoman and Superman heading our way next year, Kate’s world is about to converge with the Kryptonians in some interesting ways. And that opens up plenty of possibilities.
How Will Safiyah Sohail Factor Into Next Season?
The most recent episodes of Batwoman have teased the arrival of a new big bad: Safiyah Sohail. According to Julia, she’s been doing what she can to keep Safiyah away from Kate. But now that Julia’s double-crossed her, it seems Safiyah is likely to make an appearance in Gotham next season — especially after her veiled threats toward Sophie.
We don’t know much about this villain just yet, but we do know that even Alice is afraid of her. Given how little Alice fears, that’s enough reason to be concerned about Kate and her friends. How Safiyah will factor into the storylines happening right now remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Her apperance is likely to have us all on the edge of our seats.
