After a polarizing first season, Titans seems to be doubling down on their comic book roots in season two.

DC Comics’ streaming service, DC Universe, recently released the official trailer for season two of their controversial adaptation Titans.

This series was the first live-action show to premiere on DC Universe and promised a gritty take on the Teen Titans comics. However, the series received mixed reviews in its first season, with Brenton Thwaites portrayal as Robin simultaneously earning praise for its quality and criticism for stealing the spotlight from what was supposed to be an ensemble cast.

Critics and fans also bristled at the unfavorable depictions of Starfire and Raven while the role of Gar (a.k. Beast Boy) was treated as little more than a glorified guest appearance. Viewers will recall the show’s first season concluded on a somewhat lackluster finale that featured Robin being taken over by Raven’s demonic father, Trigon.

The season 2 trailer for the series offers up much substance this time around, rather than just serving as the origin story for Dick Grayson’s Nightwing.

For starters, there seems to be some relationship issues going on between Hawk and Dove (who was almost killed in the first season), as they struggle to reconcile their superhero alter-egos with their need for a simple life of just being together. Thankfully, we also get to see more of Donna Troy, whose character was one of the few highlights from the first season. Donna seems to be taking on a co-leader role of the team with Robin, while also still being his moral compass. We even get to see her in full Wonder Girl regalia! Donna and Starfire also seem to be bonding while taking down a superbaddie, we love supportive queens.

New faces that show up include the villainous Deathstroke, whose famous storyline The Judas Contract is hinted at, as well as his two children, Ravager and Jericho. It’s definitely worth noting that the role of Jericho is being played by Chella Man, who is a trans and deaf actor. Bruce Wayne also makes an appearance, played by Game of Thrones alum Iain Glen. We also see glimpses of Krypto and Superboy (a possible clone of Superman), along with Aqualad, who seems to have  some sort of strained romantic relationship with Donna. The villain version of Doctor Light also seems to make an appearance, though it is not yet known if he will in fact be evil.
