A unique walker is headed for Fear the Walking Dead, and it will change everything

Fear the Walking Dead’s co-showrunner teases a new walker, and it’s going to make a major impact on the Walking Dead universe.

When it comes to the many versions of walkers we’ve seen on The Walking Dead, we’ve seen a lotFrozen walkers. Flying walkers. Plus all the walker versions of our beloved characters (R.I.P., all of you).

But according to Fear the Walking Dead co-showrunner Ian Goldberg, we ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

During AMC Networks’ annual summit in New York City, INSIDER reports Goldberg teased a very interesting walker is headed for the Walking Dead‘s spin-off show.

“There will be one walker in particular, I have to be careful saying this around [The Walking Dead universe chief content officer] Scott [Gimple]. Let’s just say this walker will open a universe of possibilities for our storytelling,” Goldberg explained.

So what is so special about this walker and what does it mean for The Walking Dead universe?

The Whisperers are headed for Fear

The first thought that comes to mind is this “walker” isn’t a walker at all, but instead a Whisperer. As we saw in season 9 of The Walking Dead, the Whisperers are migratory and head further south during colder months. With Fear currently set in Texas, there’s a big possibility Morgan, Alicia, Strand and the rest of the Fear crew will run into someone from Alpha’s pack — if not Alpha herself. Just think about it — Morgan facing off with Alpha? Perfect.

Someone lost returns as a walker

If this walker is truly just that — a walker — then perhaps it’s a walker of someone we know from the show? It can’t be Dwight, because we’ve seen him well and alive in promos for the upcoming season of Fear. It likely isn’t Heath, because while we haven’t seen him in a while and fear he’s dead, this walker would have to be someone pretty special to “open a universe of possibilities” for storytelling.

We highly doubt it’d be someone as major as Maggie or Rick, because those two easily have more stories to be told — either by reappearing on the show or in one of the upcoming Walking Dead movies. So… our thoughts turn to characters whose deaths would be impactful and create interesting new storylines — like Morgan or Alicia on Fear or Daryl or Ezekiel on The Walking Dead.

Walkers are evolving… or being cured

A final theory is that this game-changer walker is one that has evolved somehow. Perhaps it is able to think or feel. Remember when Milton ran studies for the Governor and thought the dead could remember their past? That’d be a terrifying thought — undead who are able to think, and eventually, evolve enough to plan attacks against the living.

Another (perhaps more viable) theory is someone or a group of people are working on walkers to cure them or find a cure for the living. Sure, being bit by a walker would still hurt and likely cause death if it’s a fatal wound. But if the living had a cure so they don’t turn once they die? Or a cure for nips and scratches from a walker? That’d be one big step closer to rebuilding society to what it once was.
