Katy Keene pilot: Everything we know about the show so far
Riverdale’s world is expanding once again, this time with a musical series based on the Katy Keene comics. As the cast grows, we learn more about this new set of characters.
Since it premiered on The CW, Riverdale has been a hit for the network, as it’s a drama series filled with everything from angst to humor, and even murder mysteries. Then it was announced that we would be getting another series based around Archie Comics, this time Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. With both shows being successful on their respective networks (The CW and Netflix), it made sense when it was announced that we would be getting a Katy Keene series.
While we didn’t know much about the series, unless you were a fan of the comics, as the cast has come together, new details have emerged, giving us a better feel for the newest addition to the Riverdale family. Although the series is currently in development, and has not been officially picked up by the network yet, that doesn’t mean we don’t have some insight into what to expect, at least out of the pilot.
What the series is about
Katy Keene is a show about Katy, a personal shopper whose dream is to become a fashion designer. (In the comics, she is also a model, actress, and singer, so we bet these aspects come into play in the show as well.) Living in New York City, Katy is trying to follow her dreams, but she is not alone in pursuing her passions, as her friends are also looking to make a name for themselves. From actors and musicians to artists and fashion designers, the people in her circle are all looking to follow their dreams, while being there for each other.
The show is also described as a musical dramedy, which means we are going to get plenty of singing and dancing, as well as comedy and drama. It won’t be a lot like its sister shows, but that’s okay, because it will be a fresh approach to the comics that spawned Riverdale.
Who is in the cast
The first cast announcement was actually a Riverdale alum, as it was announced that Ashleigh Murray, who plays Josie McCoy, would be joining the series. And in the lead role of Katy Keene, we just learned that Lucy Hale would be taking in the titular character, according to Variety.
Other cast members of note include James Maslow, Julia Chan, Camille Hyde, Jonny Beauchamp, and Lucien Laviscount.
Premiere date
At this time there is no word on exactly when Katy Keene will premiere. However, with the way the cast has come together since the series was announced, it is likely to happen sometime this year. However, we will have to wait for an official announcement from either The CW or series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Potential crossovers
When the series was first announced, I talked about some of the crossovers we want to see happen. However, with the series set after Riverdale (which we know because Josie is being described as a 20-something who has left her high school days behind her in order to pursue her dreams), it may be hard to have a true crossover event. That being said, knowing that Josie is part of the series already gives us one of the crossovers we asked for.
Even if the show doesn’t go all in on a crossover episode like other interconnected CW shows do, that doesn’t mean we might not find some hidden Easter eggs. After all, even the first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina gave us a taste of Riverdale, and those shows are as far apart in terms of genres as they can possibly get (soapy drama versus supernatural witchcraft). While Katy Keene sounds nothing like Riverdale or Sabrina in terms of tone, that doesn’t mean we couldn’t see something pop up to remind us that these shows have a connection (at least in the comics).
We can’t wait to find out even more about the show, including how many episodes we may get, when it will officially premiere, and even how the series will come together. We are excited for all of the details to be revealed, and we definitely can’t wait for Katy Keene to join the official Archie universe.
