Loki can be many things, and we love him for that.  After all, he is the God of Mischief, so whatever shape that he can transform himself into often releases comical and crucial value into’s Loki’s unique storyline.  During the first season of the Disney+ Marvel series, Loki reveals a personal and groundbreaking aspect of himself.  Having been in past relationships with both princesses and princesses, Loki came out as bisexual.

It was just a casual affirmation but it reflects how representation should be handled correctly in media.

Tom Hiddleston the actor behind the God, shared with The Guardian that Loki coming out as bisexual “was a small step, and there’s further to go [in the series], but it was important to all of us.”  Since a large portion of the Marvel fandom are members of the LGBTQA community, having the central hero (or antihero) who identifies as bisexual in a critically acclaimed and successful series holds a “meaningful”  token.

It wasn’t just Hiddleston that was excited about Loki’s hinted sexuality and its prospects in future storylines; director Kate Herron wanted the God to be represented in that respect and hopes to explore that in the future.  During the first season of Loki, Herron revealed on Twitter that it was “very important” to acknowledge Loki’s bisexuality as it’s part of who he is.  Now that that side of Loki is officially canon, maybe the second season will have more focused plotlines.

Furthermore, Sophia Di Martino, who stars as Sylvie (the female version of the Shapeshifter), opened up to Variety amid the first season regarding Loki’s coming-out significance.   The two shared impactful conservation of their romantic pasts, which drew the canonical conclusion to his orientation.

"We’re just playing it like it’s quite natural conversation between two friends — well, two acquaintances, at that point. So we tried not to give it too much weight, but we knew in the back of our minds how important it was to a lot of people. And I’ve got to say how happy it makes me that people are happy to see that."

What are your thoughts on Loki’s coming out?  Do you hope that it will be part of the second season’s themes?

You can catch the first season of the Marvel series on Disney+.  The second season is set to premiere at a future date.
