James Corden has announced he is leaving late-night television.

The host of The Late Late Show has announced that he will step down from his hosting duties of the CBS show in 2023. That will mark an eight-season run. Corden began serving as host in 2015.

Corden announced his departure during his opening monologue on Thursday night.

He said: “When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey, an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination. I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it. And I really think in a year from now, that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there.”

Prior to his tenure, Craig Fergurson served as host of The Late Late Show for nine years.

With Corden’s addition to the show, many viral segments were created. Arguably, Corden’s most successful segment has been “Carpool Karaoke”. The segment involved Corden and a guest (a musical artist), driving around Los Angeles singing their music while Corden interjects with relevant interview questions.

His segment with Adele has been watched more than 250 million times on Youtube and his segment with One Direction as a guest has been watched approximately 189 million times. Other popular segments from the show include “Crosswalk Musical”, where Corden and Broadway’s stars perform songs from musicals during stoplights, and “Spill Your Guts”, where Corden challenges guests to answer difficult questions or face the task of eating unknown food objects.

While there has been no announcement as to who will replace Corden as host or what Corden will pursue after leaving The Late Late Show, there are plenty of opportunities that exist for the host. He won a Tony award in 2012 for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors and starred in the British sitcom Gavin & Stacey.
