Here’s why we miss The Originals on The CW

There have been many shows that have come and gone on The CW. But perhaps the one I miss the most is the spinoff of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals.

While I was always a fan of The Vampire Diaries (from when it was a book series, straight through the entire eight-season run), The Originals holds a special place in my heart. And one of the reasons for that is the Mikaelson family. Whether we are talking about Klaus and Elijah (who are definitely at the core of the family, much like the Salvatore brothers) or Rebekah and Freya, there is something special about this family.

And their fascinating history was a big part of what made this series so amazing. We got to watch the birth of vampires and the history of witches and werewolves as it pertained to the Mikaelson family. Of course, there was plenty of familial drama too, all of which built this world and enriched these characters.

Without The Originals, The CW is missing out on something special

We had the villain of one series, Klaus, who in many ways was the anti-hero of the entire TVD universe. While he was certainly never a hero, Klaus was also as much a victim as he was the bad guy of the world. Even when he wanted to do the right thing for the people he cared about, he was always in a battle with his instincts, leading to many tortured moments.

And yes, a lot of what made The Originals so good was the fact that Klaus was so bad. He was the villain for so many people that there were plenty of times when it was him versus the world.

At its core, The Originals was about family. Yet, it was also about what happens when you are the villain that everyone wants to destroy, even as you are doing everything to protect your own. Klaus was truly the heart of the series, but without Elijah, he would barely have been that.

And that is why this series was so good. Because there was never a point when the show was only about one person. It was about the collective family and all of the things that they have done in their lives to get to a certain moment.

Even with Legacies as a spinoff of both series, there is nothing quite like it. The Originals stood on its own, even away from its parent series. And there is truly no other show that lives up to what it brought to The CW every week.

And perhaps one of the things that truly made this show work was its cast. It was amazing in its own right thanks to people like Joseph Morgan, Claire Holt, Daniel Gillies, Charles Michael Davis, and Phoebe Tonkin, to name just a few.

What do you think? Do you miss The Originals as much as we do? Do you think the show should have been given more episodes or another season?
