Can the Super Squad succeed without Hope Mikaelson or Lizzie and Josie Saltzman? Well, they are about to find out. MG had taken up the leadership role after Hope had left Mystic Falls with her humanity off. However, at least he had the twins to help for a while. That is, until “I Can’t Be The One To Stop You.”

Lizzie had left to fulfill her revenge against Hope, except, in the end, she was the one facing a drastic lifestyle change. Although no one else is aware that Lizzie is a transitioning Heretic, it likely means she will be traveling with Hope for a while.

Simultaneously, Josie has also left the Salvatore School behind on a journey to save Hope and bring back the Tribrid’s humanity. Although the trio faces different challenges outside of Mystic Falls, the Super Squad still has plenty to deal with back at the Salvatore School.

With the central trio missing, it is time for the remaining Super Squad members to step up. It will also allow the group to create, maintain, or develop significant relationships outside Hope and the twins.

Finch, who has never had enough screentime to develop much outside of being Josie’s girlfriend, has taken up the pack’s temporary Alpha role. Although Legacies has touched on Finch and Jed’s dynamic before, this storyline has the potential to bond them through understanding the weight of that responsibility. Jed may not be acting as Alpha, but he can still help Finch find comfort in the position. This could also create a chance for Finch to create her stable friendships.

Although Malivore has been defeated, Kaleb and Ethan each got to keep the powers they were given while helping him. However, Kaleb’s guilt had prevented him from actively using his newest abilities. But, through his relationship with Jed, there may have been an opening to allow Kaleb the chance to forgive himself and use his new powers for good.

As for Ethan, he got the opportunity to join the school and squad, but his latest actions gave MG a reason to ask Ethan to leave. In addition, Ethan’s decision to help Lizzie’s revenge plot and lie to MG about it has likely harmed the trust between the duo, and it may take time to heal.

Legacies have always understood the complicated history that followed Hope, Lizzie, and Josie, but it has rarely addressed or divulged the actual backstories for its other lead characters. Although Cleo, Landon, and Rafael’s histories got the chance to be explained, others have yet to be revealed.

Even though MG took a trip to his hometown in season 1, he has never revealed how he became a vampire. The same could be said for Kaleb, who had teased the early days of his transition but had not yet explained what had occurred. The truth revolving around how Jed triggered his werewolf curse is still a mystery too. Although Jed explains his feelings about the aftermath of triggering the curse, he never goes into the details of what had happened.

Being vague about essential details for main characters can be frustrating, even if those are not the most important details to the overall story. However, it would still help craft a more extensive backstory to understand what they had gone through in the past.

With Hope, Josie, and Lizzie off on their adventures, perhaps there may finally be time for the remaining Super Squad members to reveal their histories to each other. This is a chance to develop the existing friendships or create conflicts that make less portrayed dynamics more interesting. It is also an opportunity for the squad to prove themselves as capable without relying on Hope, Lizzie, or Josie to help them if something goes wrong. The Super Squad has proved their abilities and usefulness before, now is the time for them to step up in a way they never have previously.
