The 2022 BRIT Awards ring in the start of awards season

Awards season has come alive! The recent nominations for the Academy Awards have just been announced and Hollywood is alive and buzzing. With the recent BRIT Awards having just taken place on February 8th at London’s O2 Arena,  award shows are also having live audiences and performances again. The BRITs were no different! Here is what you need to know about the big night.

This year’s BRIT Awards came saw old and new.

Although the award show had its traditional music categories, this year saw a major shift to them. For the first time, the show had no gender categories. This reflected a change MTV did in 2017 when it changed its Video Music Awards gender-neutral. The moon man that fans grew up seeing on their yearly awards show changed its title to a “moonperson”. With this change, it welcomed more music heavyweights like Billie Eilish, Dave, Olivia Rodrigo, and Ed Sheeran to go up against each other in the same category. It also saw women take home 12 of the 15 awards.

With the year Adele has with the success of her latest album, 30, it came as no surprise that Adele was the winner of the night. Adele won Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Brit Song of the Year for “Easy On Me”.  She has a total of 12 Brit Awards.

Ed Sheeran was also a major winner of the night. The musician is largely overlooked as a writer. He has co-written and collaborated with artists such as Rita Ora, BTS, Elton John, and Taylor Swift. Because so, he won the newest award of the year, Songwriter of the Year. The award was voted for by an independent panel.
