Since the finale aired in November of 2021, fans of AppleTV+’s hit newsroom drama The Morning Show have been eagerly awaiting a third season renewal. In breaking news, the series has been renewed, but with a major change: Kerry Ehrin will no longer serve as showrunner for the series.

The new showrunner, Charlotte Stoudt, known for her producer roles on House of Cards and Homeland, will take over, with Ehrin remaining as a consultant for the third season. Both now have overall deals with Apple, allowing Ehrin to step away to focus on other projects for AppleTV+. Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Anniston will return in their starring roles, as well as continue to be producers on the project.

The Morning Show has been known for its constant shifting and pivoting over its short existence, and this new showrunner is no exception. Stoudt is the third showrunner for the series in as many seasons. Ehrin stepped into the role when the drama changed directions to cover the #MeToo movement, taking over the spot from original showrunner Jay Carson. Then, ahead of season 2, the show changed directions again, shifting to a COVID-focused season.

It’s still unknown the direction The Morning Show will head in season 3, but Witherspoon expressed interest in showcasing life post-quarantine for the characters. Despite still experiencing new variants and surges of COVID in our daily lives, the series could allow a look into what a post-pandemic world may look like.

Early speculation has indicated a potential time-skip, but what else we’ll see during the third outing of this series remains to be seen. Confirmation of Witherspoon and Anniston’s return is reassuring, but I’m sure The Morning Show fans are also dying to know what other characters will be returning, including season 2 stand-out: Laura Peterson.

Of course, the next question on every Morning Show fans’ mind is: When should we expect season 3?

Though there’s no official date yet, in a post shared via Apple’s Newsroom, the tech giant listed The Morning Show as a “returning favorite,” to expect another season from in the coming year, along with hits like Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest. Apple could be gearing up for a fourth-quarter release for the third season, most likely wanting Anniston, Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup to be contenders in the following awards season, where The Morning Show has thrived in years past.

Even beyond season 3, Apple, Witherspoon, and Anniston have expressed interest in continuing the series into more seasons, if there are “vital stories to keep telling,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
