The Morning Show focuses on months leading up to COVID-19

“The Morning Show” explores the cutthroat world of morning news and the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning. Told through the lens of two complicated women working to navigate the mine field of high-octane jobs while facing crises in both their personal and professional lives, “The Morning Show” is an unapologetically candid drama that looks at the power dynamics between women and men, and women and women, in the workplace. Apple TV+ series, The Morning Show (also known as Morning Wars in some territories) had to rethink its current season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The sophomore offering of the show was only thirteen days into production when it was shut down due to COVID-19. During this time, it gave the writers a chance to retool the story.

Mimi Leder, one of the directors and an executive producer on the series told THR that they had to constantly write on the call sheet that anyone who was sick, shouldn’t be on set. Essentially, everyone was nervous that there would be an outbreak and they had every right to be concerned.

Actress and producer Reese Witherspoon backed this up by saying that they didn’t know what was going to happen upon returning from lockdown. She added that the topic of conversation was how they were going to protect themselves from the virus, rather than take on any chat of work.

In 2018, Kerry Ehrin became the series’ showrunner and rewrote the first season to center around the #MeToo movement that was circulating after the Harvey Weinstein scandal entered the headlines in 2017. THR says that when Ehrin started her quarantine, she received a phone call from Apple and Media Res that they wanted the second season to be written.

The Morning Show was introduced as a flagship series for AppleTV+ and is considered one of the best shows on the platform. Because of this, it is understandable why the higher-ups wanted to focus on two of the most important topics of the last five years. What is unique about centering the second season on the pandemic is that they show the impact of the virus on not just the subject matter in-universe but in the real world via the use of aerial shots of a very empty looking New York, THR proclaims.

Highlighting the pandemic without frightening people is often difficult to do as many are told not to discuss it because it is too confronting. However, it is an important real-life event that needs to be documented and The Morning Show is the perfect platform to highlight it.
