Ever since Hope Mikaelson flipped her humanity switch, she has been at the center of numerous storylines. Whether it be Lizzie’s desire for vengeance, Josie’s determination to save Hope, or Hope’s own No-Humanity tirade, which eventually led her to Aurora. However, while all of these things occur, Landon and Alaric conduct their subplot in Limbo.

In the real world, the Super Squad has been divided, dealing with how to handle Hope, and it has taken several episodes and energy. But, through it all, Landon and Alaric have been trapped elsewhere, unaware of everything happening with the rest of those they care about.

Although keeping Landon and Alaric in Limbo keeps the duo active on-screen, their storyline has minor stakes and, compared to what is occurring in the real world, is also severely lacking in action or excitement.

For the most part, Landon and Alaric have teamed up with Ted to get out of Limbo and reach the next step, whether it be peace or a way back home. Legacies portray their dilemma initially as each of the trio needing to gain a coin that would give them access to the boat.

Alaric, learning this, becomes aggressive in his attempts to earn a coin, even going as far as to try and steal someone else’s. However, when Alaric finally does gain a coin, he, Landon, and Ted discover that they need to each gain more to atone for the past.

However, the story is not enough to drag the plotline down; it is also each character’s reaction to what is happening to them.

Although Landon addresses concern over what happened to Hope after she defeated Malivore, he does not seem concerned or in a hurry to reunite with Hope. Instead, Landon comes across as reasonably calm about the entire situation.

This is a strange story choice given the show’s history of latching Landon to Hope. While this does not suggest Landon has given up on Hope, there are still many elements to their relationship that are up in the air. Still, Legacies has shown that Landon has a talent for helping people move on, which may hint at storylines to come.

As for Alaric, Lizzie’s storyline requires him to be out of the way. However, he could be trying harder to return home, especially after his last moment with Lizzie. Yet, after being discouraged at the thought of having to gather more coins, he chooses to get drunk rather than try to return to his daughters. But, by staying in Limbo, Alaric misses many vital things, such as Josie’s departure and Lizzie’s heretic transition.

Season 4 is a big step forward in creating a darker tone for Legacies, but Landon and Alaric’s journey does not match the rest of the intense actions.

When Legacies returns, the season needs to pick up the pace for Landon and Alaric. While it is uncertain what their returning to the real world will bring for the series moving forward,  Landon and Alaric can not be kept in Limbo forever.
