In the penultimate episode of Season 3 of Roswell, New Mexico, we not only learned more about Jones’ plans and what went down on his planet, but we also saw a major breakthrough with Michael.

Over the course of the entire third season, Roswell has given us some unique character growth, specifically with Michael, even as we can easily point to the fact that this has not been a very Michael-heavy season. But maybe because of how little we got out of Michael, the things we did see really stood out.

In this season, he has learned some hard truths about himself and his past, in particular the reality of who his father is, and by the eleventh episode of this season, we finally saw him embracing who he is and what he can do as an alien.

Not only is Michael the son of the dictator (aka Jones himself), but he has many of his gifts. And because of that, it makes him a powerful individual. In fact, thanks to Michael we know that there is a chance that our aliens could potentially defeat Jones.

Roswell gave us a chance to see Michael embracing who he is as an alien

Not only does he have the ability to take control of a person’s mind, much like Jones can, but he is also able to manipulate things such as fire. But it was the moment with Sanders, his boss/father figure that really shined in this episode. It was a reminder that Michael is so much more than just the son of a villain. He is also his mother’s child. And in many ways, he is also Sanders’ son.

What does this mean? It means that even if Michael may doubt himself, he is still a good person. He may have his faults like any of us, but in the end, he is more hero than anything else. And no matter what his abilities may be, they do not define him as a person.

No matter what Michael has dealt with in his life, he is more of a toasted marshmallow than anything else and that makes us love him as a character. He is the quintessential bad boy with a heart of gold. And that was front and center in Roswell‘s episode 11, where we saw him struggle with knowing that he has the gifts of a man who twisted those gifts into a negative.

At the end of the day, Michael may end up being the hero that no one saw coming.

We still have a two-hour finale to get through, but at this point, Michael is our boy and we can’t wait to see if he ends up being the ultimate warrior.
