With Star Wars expanding into the realm of television, Jason Isaacs aka Grand Inquisitor from Rebels expressed interest in playing the character again.

The world of Star Wars has been around since 1977, and while the Skywalker Saga may be over, the Star Wars franchise is exploring new avenues, including its lineup of television series, which ranges from animated series like Star Wars: Rebels  to the popular Disney+ series, The Mandalorian.

And Disney Investor Day revealed that Lucasfilm has no intention of slowing down with its miniseries and spin-offs. Just about every interesting character is getting their own story on Disney+, leaving fans to wonder who else might receive the spin-off treatment in the future. Apparently, the Grand Inquisitor from Star Wars: Rebels is on the table.

Jason Isaacs, who voiced the character in the animated series, admitted he would be interested in reprising the role if given the opportunity. With so many animated Star Wars characters making the jump to live-action, Isaacs is intrigued at the prospect of doing the same. Voice actors from animated Star Wars projects have even been able to portray their characters in a live-action fomat, as seen with Katte Sackhoff playing Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian.

During an interview with Collider, Isaacs commented on seeing Sackhoff make the leap from animation to live-action and weighed in on the idea of doing the same thing with his character.

“The Inquisitor was a great part when I played it and if the Inquisitor was a great part again, I’d be up for it…Katee had a very good time,” he said. “I know Katee and I’ll say, I’ve loved being part of the Star Wars world. They’ve invited me in, although I’ve only ever been an animated character before.”

Fans of Star Wars: Rebels may note that Grand Inquisitor, a villain who was tasked with hunting down any of the remaining Jedi, did not make it to the second season. While it makes sense that we may not see Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars stories following Rebels, there appears to be a loophole that may make it possible to see him again.

In the world of fantasy, sci-fi, and comics, anything can happen. In a 2020 issue of the Star Wars comic books, Grand Inquisitor’s spirit was saved by none other than Darth Vader, and he has been cursed for eternity to guard, as ScreenRant explains, “an ancient temple on the planet Tempes.”

This allows for possible opportunities for Grand Inquisitor to return in such series as the upcoming Ahsoka Tano spin-off.

Digging further into his interest in playing the Grand Inquisitor a live-action spin-off, Isaacs added, “I think it was because of his lightsaber. I’d like to use that spinning red lightsaber. I have the coolest wand in the Harry Potter world and I have the cool lightsaber in the Star Wars world.”

However, Isaacs also explained that a good story is ultimately the most important thing when it comes to a decision like this:

"“It’s always about the script…[People] go, ‘There’s a character just like that in this. Wouldn’t you like to be in Outlander playing so and so?’ And I go, ‘Well, not really because you’re just saying I should bring that character over from The Patriot,’ or whatever.”"

However, seeing as Isaacs said he’s “open to anything,”  it looks as if the right script could see him rejoining the Star Wars universe in an all-new way.
