Originally aiming for an October 2021 theatrical release, Scream 5 has been pushed back to 2022 amid concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fifth installment of the popular Scream franchise has officially set a 2022 release date. Scream 5 had previously been slated to hit theaters in the fall of 2021, but has become one of the latest films to reschedule due to moviegoing uncertainties and delays surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. While movies such as Unhinged and the long-anticipated The New Mutants have recently enjoyed theatrical releases, strong potential blockbusters like Black Widow and Wonder Woman:1984 have had their release dates pushed back multiple times.

To the movie’s benefit, the buzz surrounding the next Scream saga has taken on a a different life, one primarily focused on casting decisions and production announcements. Previously, both Courtney Cox and David Arquette signed on to reprise their original roles for the new film and, while still unconfirmed, Neve Campbell has expressed interest in returning to the role of Sidney Prescott. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) are set to direct the film.

Paramount has announced that Scream 5 will be released on January 14, 2022. The decision comes as part of the studio’s latest rearranging of its release calendar. It joins other shuffled titles like Snake Eyes, the G.I. Joe spinoff previously set for Oct. 23, 2020; now rescheduled for Oct. 22, 2021, and the next installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise, which was pushed from March of 2021 to March of 2022.

Given that there is so much still unknown about COVID-19, it’s difficult to say whether or not things will be any better next year or the year after that. It remains to be seen if people will returning to theaters in the same numbers they did before the pandemic. This may work in the film’s favor, to help build anticipation and flush out casting decisions. Both fans of the franchise and star David Arquette would love to see Hayden Panettiere reprise her role from Scream 4 (we never actually saw her die), so perhaps this is giving the studio more wiggle room to land additional Scream alumni?
