The Good Place airs its season finale next week, and its penultimate episode covered plenty. Which begs the question: Where else can we go from here?

The Good Place has two episodes left before it ends completely. In its penultimate episode, we finally saw the Good Place in all its glory.

Except it was horribly broken. Its inhabitants were euphoria zombies, lost in the haze of instant gratification for all of eternity, dreaming about milkshakes and not about math piles like they used to.

And within the confines of the 22-minute episode, the Soul Squad fixed the broken Good Place, one more achievement before eternal bliss. They offer a mystery door, one that will end a person’s existence completely, giving back a bit of meaning to all of the good things in the Good Place.

And the ending shot of Eleanor and Chidi snuggled up on the couch, watching the sunset, infinite bliss ahead of them, really felt like it could have been the series finale.

It’s not. We have two extended episodes left. And honestly… where do we go from here?

Because most of us believed the last few episodes would be the crew fixing literal heaven, but they accomplished that in one episode. Now what?

One would make the educated guess that in the finale, we will see Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, Jason, Michael, and Janet walk through their brand-new mystery door and end their existence together. We aren’t sure what lies behind that door, but it’s possible that it’s still a bit of my theory from the start of the season: Reality is a wheel, and they start their whole journey over again.

Another educated guess is that they’ve been stuck in the Bad Place for all four seasons of the show. Still yet another guess would be that this is their version of the new afterlife test, and the Good Place we’ve seen still isn’t the true form of the Good Place.

This show has always been about the relationships we forge to find happiness along the path of life. It’s not things that make us happy for eternity, but people. That’s why all of the members currently in eternal bliss were bliss-overloaded zombies. They’re all there alone with no one they love to share experiences with.

The Soul Squad now has each other. Does that change things? Probably. Everything they do, they’ll do together — at least the bigger things that matter, like walking through the new door.

All we can truly say is that the last two episodes of The Good Place are going to be one heck of a ride.
