The Good Place brings us to the actual Good Place. But not everything is fine. Something is amiss, and our crew has one last task ahead of them.

Well, folks, we’re down to the last few episodes of The Good Place. Last week saw the Soul Squad floating off to the Good Place once and for all.

But is it all it’s cracked up to be?

Not-So-Short Summary & Analysis

What do we see on the way to the Good Place? A flying puppy with a superhero cape and doggles, of course!

First off, when the crew arrives, Janet takes in all of the knowledge of the place and warns them that they can’t take it all in at once or their brains will be scrambled. When they’re ready, there will be a magical gala held for them. It’s perfectly catered to all four of them as a weird mish-mash.

Michael’s freaking out because he doesn’t feel like he belongs. But the Good Place committee welcomes him immediately. They are going to swear him in as an official Good Place architect.

Syke! They trick him into being the new leader of the Good Place, and then the entire committee bails! It is literally just Michael.

Enter Hypatia of Alexandria, aka Patty, aka Lisa Kudrow! “You gotta help us, we are so screwed!” she says, catching Chidi and Eleanor’s attention immediately. Tahani also notices something is up with all of the party guests just not caring about the first new arrivals in 500 years.

On paper, it’s paradise. When perfection goes on forever, you turn into a mush person. Patty attempting to explain math (number piles) gives us the best Chidi facial expressions.

Jason gives them the best example. He did everything he wanted to do in every permutation he could conceive and then he’s done. And there’s still infinity left.

They need to rework the Good Place.

Every human is a little bit sad all the time because you know you’re going to die, but that knowledge is what gives life meaning. The solution is to just let them leave. Leave the universe completely. And since Michael is in charge, they can do whatever they want.

So they create another door Good Place guests can go through whenever they’re ready. What’s behind it? No one knows, but they will be at peace.

So basically… it’s the idea of life itself — coming to a mysterious end and not knowing what comes next, if anything — and using that idea to find joy in what’s offered to you. Because then it’s not infinite if there’s a way to end it.

And then it turns into a party.

Michael rebuilds their old neighborhood, and Everything is Fine.

Favorite Moments & Lines

  • Michael claiming that he doesn’t have weed and then weed appearing on him. Plus him smoking said weed later.
  • “Is Big Ben… somehow your godfather?” Chidi asks of Tahani.
  • ”Let’s change the afterlife… and then! …Taco Bell.” And then a burrito shows up in Michael’s hand!
  • I also thoroughly enjoyed the Old Spice commercial with William Jackson Harper. I am very okay with him being the new spokesperson.
