In another exciting piece of casting news for James Gunn’s star-studded Suicide Squad reboot, it looks like Doctor Who veteran Peter Capaldi has joined the cast.

As if we weren’t excited enough about this film already, there’s one more reason to be hyped for James Gunn’s reboot of Suicide Squad. According to Deadline, Peter Capaldi has officially joined the cast in an unknown role. Capaldi, who has several BAFTAs and an Oscar under his belt, is another stellar addition to a cast that’s shaping up to be one impressive lineup.

Probably best known to fans as the 12th Doctor in the long-running BBC series Doctor Who, Capaldi also garnered praise for his four-time BAFTA-nominated role as the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in political comedy The Thick of It.

In addition to Capaldi (and a possible cameo from SNL’s Pete Davidson), Suicide Squad is already set to star a gaggle of returnees from the original film, as well as a few brand new faces for Gunn’s reimagining. The returning cast members include Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinneman, who will all be reprising their roles from the 2016 film.

Newcomers to the cast include Idris Elba, Taika Waititi, Nathan Fillion, and Flula Borg, all of whom have roles that have yet to be revealed. The lineup will also include characters like King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Ratcatcher, all characters who were absent from the first Suicide Squad, but have already been cast.

Aside from its formidable cast, this Suicide Squad remake also has some pretty powerful juice behind the scenes as well. In the midst of his highly publicized firing from Disney, Gunn surprised fans when he signed on to Suicide Squad as writer, director, and co-producer. The move was especially shocking considering that Suicide Squad is a DC Comics property, and therefore the most direct competition for his highly popular Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy.

Though shooting on Suicide Squad has yet to begin, Gunn’s reimagining of the less-than-stellar 2016 film of the same name is set to hit theaters in August of 2021.
