At San Diego Comic-Con, Culturess attended a roundtable interview with The Good Place cast member Jameela Jamil. Here are her thoughts on Tahani for the final season.

Just three years ago when The Good Place first premiered, we were greeted by Tahani Al-Jamil, the gracious, slightly pretentious do-gooder who always seemed to one-up Eleanor Shellstrop.

Today, as we enter the final season of The Good Place, Tahani has almost done a complete 180. She and Eleanor are basically BFFs, and she’s learned that she isn’t the center of the universe (or the Bad Place) anymore.

Culturess got the chance to catch up with Tahani actress Jameela Jamil during a San Diego Comic-Con roundtable interview, and it’s clear Jamil has a lot of love for the role and the show that put her on the map — despite the journey coming to an end with this upcoming season.

“I can’t believe I made it through four seasons opposite Ted f*cking Danson,” Jamil said. “And to watch the way that we changed, and watch the way that we’ve all grown and learned… We’ve emotionally moved so many people all around the world. Like, there’s nowhere I go where people don’t recognize our show — which is extraordinary.”

As for Tahani in this final season, Jamil couldn’t give away any spoilers about what’s next for Tahani. But she at least relayed to us what her hopes for Tahani are by the end of her journey. (You might want to prepare your tissues now.)

“I want her to find peace,” Jamil said plain and simple, “because I think we still see her desperate need for validation throughout this show. And I think so many people can relate to that.

“And also, I would like her to get along with her godd*mn sister… The episode that’s between the two of us, [where] we make up with each other [and] I realized she’s been painting me all along, it made so many people look at their relationships with their siblings. And it made me look at my relationship with my own brother, you know, in a different way as to how your parents can affect your dynamic. And so I hope that that would be resolved.”

As Jamil revealed, it’s true that part of Tahani’s journey had been about reconciling with not only herself and her actions, but with her sister as well. In fact, reconciling with her sister allowed Tahani to grow and become the person who we know her to be now. It’s just one example of how the show uses relationships to not only move the plot foward, but move forward characters’ growth as well.

With that, of course, includes Eleanor and Chidi’s relationship — that which has seen almost as many ups and downs as Jason and Tahani’s, and Jason and Janet’s.

Jamil promised we could see much more of Eleanor and Chidi’s relationship as the series goes into its final season.

“I think the most stressful and emotional relationship belongs to Chidi and Eleanor in this [season],” she began. “At the end of season three, we see Chidi volunteering, you know, to do something incredibly heroic and devastating after they’ve just found each other. So I think that is the central theme/relationship that we’re trying to follow in this season.”

The previous season of The Good Place saw Chidi accepting that he would have to have his memory wiped, lest he interferes with the final experiment — especially with his former partner, Simone, thrown in the mix. That proved to be the ultimate cliffhanger, and it’s definitely a relationship we’ll all be rooting for as he and Eleanor (hopefully) find a way to love one another again.

Chidi and Eleanor aside, Jamil’s concluding thoughts on Tahani’s journey are simple: “I think everyone just finds Tahni hopefully less annoying, but she’s still a d*ck.”
