San Diego Comic-Con kicked off just yesterday, but there are already plenty of noteworthy announcements and trailers to talk about.

San Diego Comic-Con has arrived, and with it, many long-awaited announcements and trailers for some of our favorite TV shows and movies. We’re only on day two of the show, but the first day already gave fans some exciting moments to talk about.

Not only did fans get a surprise appearance from a huge-name celebrity, but trailers are dropping left and right — along with news about the future of The Walking Dead and Star Trek‘s upcoming television series (though we’ll be hearing even more about those later this weekend).

We could go on forever about how much SDCC day one had to offer, but here are the five biggest things that happened at the show yesterday.

Tom Cruise showed up to announce the Top Gun: Maverick trailer.

Yes, you read that correctly. Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at Hall H to announce the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, the Top Gun sequel that fans have been eager to get a first look at. Even with a 34-year wait between films, Top Gun: Maverick still seems to capture the action and suspense that made fans fall for the first installment.

Cruise also gave some commentary about the film, musing that Comic-Con was the “perfect place” for the trailer to premiere. As you can imagine, fans were excited.

It Chapter Two got a new trailer.

It’s been almost two years since the latest reboot of Stephen King’s It hit theaters, but Pennywise is returning for the film’s sequel in September. With the release date so soon, it’s only natural we’d get another trailer at Comic-Con. And the final look at the film promises a conclusion that’s more terrifying than ever.

With a 27-year time gap between the two movies, it’ll also be interesting to see how the grown-up members of the Losers’ Club cope with Pennywise’s return — and whether or not they actually manage to get rid of the evil clown once and for all. The final trailer has us more pumped than ever to get answers to these questions. Is it September yet?

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD announced its ending.

With Disney+ on its way, most of Marvel’s television series housed on other platforms have been facing cancellation. We can officially add Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD to that list, as it was announced at the show that the seventh season would be the last.

The cast and crew told fans that the ending felt “bittersweet,” and we have to agree. The series had a longer run than most do, but we’ll be sorry to see it go. We are, however, excited to see what sort of Marvel content Disney+ brings to the table.

The trailer for HBO’s His Dark Materials dropped.

HBO has been hyping up His Dark Materials as one of its big forthcoming series, and the network released its first full-length trailer at the His Dark Materials panel last night. Based on the book series of the same name by Philip Pullman, this fantasy story looks to be an epic replacement for Game of Thrones — though likely a bit less mature.

If the Comic-Con trailer is anything to go by, fans can officially get excited about this one. The quality and story both look fantastic already.

Edward Furlong was confirmed for Teminator: Dark Fate.

During the panel for Terminator: Dark Fate, it was confirmed that Edward Furlong will be returning to the franchise as John Connor. This was a pleasant shock for fans, as no actor has ever played the character for more than one film. And given that Furlong is the original person who took on the role, it’s fitting that he should be the first to reprise it.
