A new photo from The Walking Dead season 10 hints at a very important story arc from the comic appearing in the show.

As San Diego Comic Con kicks off, Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive photo from The Walking Dead’s upcoming tenth season. The photo shows Eugene standing in front of a bank of radio equipment. Radios have played a vital role in Fear The Walking Dead, but until now, they haven’t been a major feature of The Walking Dead. However, the communities in TWD are finding it tough to stay connected without the bridge that made travel between them easier. Using radios will make communication possible, and it may just make the characters’ world bigger.

There must be other communities out there that the survivors haven’t found yet, and having radio access could be the key to finding them. If the show follows one of the major comic story arcs, the radio might lead to a huge discovery.

In the comics, Eugene starts having regular communication with a woman who is a member of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth is a massive network of survivors with towns and locations all over the place. It’s been speculated that’s the helicopter that saved Rick Grimes and the helicopter that was seen in Fear The Walking Dead belong to the Commonwealth — and that the huge community will play a role in both shows.

But it’s also possible that the helicopters are totally unconnected to the Commonwealth. In the comics, the Commonwealth has a feudal structure, where people are categorized based on their occupations before the fall.  The Commonwealth has tried to preserve civilization and has a system of government, sporting events, and other relics of the past.

In an interview with EW, Angela Kang said that the voice that the survivors heard on the radio in The Walking Dead season nine finale would play a role in an upcoming story that could be the show’s remixed version of the Commonwealth storyline. She said:

"“This will definitely be a part of the season. It’s part of the fun mystery of the season, and it will come into play in hopefully interesting ways that turn the story. I can’t tip too much about, but I think there’s some fun to be had there.”"

The Walking Dead Season 10

There should be a lot more news coming out about The Walking Dead season 10 over the next few days including the release of its first trailer, which will debut during the panel in Hall H on Friday, July 19.

After losing Andrew Lincoln last season, some critics wondered if the show would be able to recover. But the new showrunner, Angela Kang, did a great job moving the story in a new direction. The arrival of the Whisperers and their terrifying leader Alpha (played by Samantha Morton) invigorated the show. In season 10, there will be more changes as Danai Gurira will be leaving the show too, but there’s still hope that she will continue to participate in the overall The Walking Dead universe in some way.
