Marvel Studios heads to San Diego Comic-Con: Here’s what you can expect to see
By Mia Johnson
With Marvel all set to return to San Diego Comic-Con this year, everyone’s wondering what’s next for Marvel Studios. Here’s what you can expect to see.
Marvel Studios took a break from San Diego Comic-Con last year, but this year, they’re back and better than ever. (At least we hope.) While it had been teased for quite some time, Deadline reported on Tuesday that Marvel Studios would be returning to Hall H this year.
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studio’s president, played it cool after the report was released. On Twiter, Fandango’s Erik Davis tweeted Feige’s response to the news:
"Well… they’ll be a lot to talk about if we’re there. I’ll tell you that… We were waiting for #SpiderManFarFromeHome to come out, and now, very shortly, we’ll start peeling back the curtain and talking about the future."
Knowing now that everyone is at least 95 percent sure Marvel will be at Hall H, here’s what we can expect to see from Marvel Studios as they unveil what’s coming for Phase 4.
Black Widow movie reveal
The Marvel movie furthest in production right now is Black Widow’s solo film. Just a few weeks ago, Scarlett Johansson was spotted filming the first scenes for the movie. Unfortunately, that means we likely won’t be able to see any footage from the movie since it’s still so early. What we may get is a plot synopsis and a good look at the full cast (and know who their characters will be).
Shang-Chi and The Eternals announcements
With casting for Shang-Chi and The Eternals secretly underway, Marvel has been mum about officially talking about what’s going on. As far as Marvel’s concerned, there’s nothing to see here… not until they officially announce it at SDCC, that is. We may get some surprises as we learn about the casting… and so help me Odin, they better pull an E3 and bring out Keanu Reeves to confirm him for The Eternals.
Sequel announcements
Along with the new movies, Phase 4 (and 5) will see sequels for heroes who have already gotten past their first solo movie. Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2, and Captain Marvel 2 are among the movies that will be underway soon. We may also get details on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. There’s no footage to preview, but we may get a bit of information on the fascinating plot, especially with Gamora now missing following Avengers: Endgame. And, will we see a confirmation for Ant-Man 3? That’s for Kevin Feige to decide.
Updates on Disney+ shows
Unlike Marvel’s new slate of movies, the Disney+ series have already been confirmed during Disney’s investor’s presentation earlier this year. There’s so much Marvel’s going to have to offer to the streaming service that they may have to save the details for D23 the following month. Because honestly, delivering updates on WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, What If, etc. would take a lot of time. The one confirmation we’d like to know for sure is if there will be a name change for Falcon’s series — given he’s poised to be the next Captain America.
Release dates
To top it all off, most all of these announcements should come with release dates. With Marvel’s history, these dates may not be 100 percent set in stone. Like pretty much every movie they’ve released recently, they may be pushed up or pushed back. And while Disney has shared its release dates for movies through the next few years, we doubt it will become super strict about the release dates they’ve set for Marvel.
San Diego Comic-Con will run from Wednesday, July 17 to Sunday, July 21.
