Pop Culture Passport: Travel to the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida

America’s oldest city, St. Augustine has become a hot spot for travelers ever since featuring water front bars and bed and breakfasts.

St. Augustine is one of America’s most treasured cities featuring national parks, delicious local cuisine, and a super Instagram worthy street right in the middle of downtown. Once you look past some of the more touristy things like the trolley tours there’s a hustling and bustling city waiting to be explored. Locals have really created St. Augustine as a destination with small bed and breakfasts and little hot spot bars. If you’re traveling through Florida soon, you’re going to want to take a day to check out St. Augustine and it’s charm.

Where to stay: 44 Spanish Street Inn

The beautiful bed and breakfast was built in the 1920’s and is filled with charm and feels extra cozy after a long day walking around St. Augustine. It’s super convenient to the historic parts of town including restaurants, bars and activities. The Inn boasts eight guest rooms each with its own theme for a super unique experience.

Where to grab a drink: The Tiki Martini Bar

The Tini Martini Bar is one of the cutest spots we’ve ever seen. The bar is filled with art and small tables, but the outdoor patio is the real star. Why? Well, the patio faces what’s possibly the best view in St. Augustine, the inlet and the Bridge of Lions. Who wouldn’t want to sit out on a twinkle lit patio and enjoy a summer evening looking out over the water? One of our favorite drinks to get here is the Creme Brûlée Martini which features Three Olives vanilla vodka, Frangellico, and Baily’s Irish cream.

Where to eat: The Ice Plant

Everything local is part of the food and drink foundation at The Ice Plant Bar in St. Augustine. For drinks the eatery is using house-pressed juices, specially made syrups, and other tantalizing ingredients to create spectacular drinks. They are even using three different types of ice for drinks, including a 300 pound block and custom ice cubes!

The Ice Plant Bar is open for lunch and dinner, and serves up farm to table eats with local seafood and daily specials. If you’re looking for a truly great meal we love getting the local shrimp and okra beignets, which are served with hot pepper jelly and a curry aioli! To go with dinner we love the The Edge and Back drink, which is made with tequila blanco, Campari, datil pepper, cucumber, grapefruit and lemon.

What to do for fun: Magnolia Avenue

Sometimes you just want to make your friends jealous that you’re on vacation and they aren’t. That’s where Magnolia Avenue in St. Augustine steps in. The whole street is perfectly Instagram worthy with overgrown trees and Spanish moss, brining in the Southern charm of the nation’s oldest city. Magnolia Avenue is near the downtown historic district. If you’re headed to St. Augustine you’re going to want to take the quick drive over to the beautiful street and take as many photos as possible!
