Pop Culture Passport: Spending time in Savannah, Georgia

facebooktwitterreddit

Southern charm, great food, amazing river views, iconic movie locations and even a few hauntsabound in Savannah, Georgia.

Savannah is one of the most historic cities in the south, and there are plenty of cool places to hang out, grab a drink, and even visit one of the most famous spots in movie history! While most people might think of Savannah as a place to take ghost tours and walk around the touristy River Street, there’s so much more to the vibrant city.

The city is known for it’s hospitality and friendliness, so it’s no wonder thousands of people go there each year! Where else can you do a visit an art museum in the afternoon then eat in a historic Greyhound Bus terminal for dinner? Only in Savannah!

Where to stay: Kehoe House

Bed and breakfast options are endless in Savannah, but one of the best is the Kehoe House. The restored 1892 mansion is right in the middle of Savannah’s historic district overlooking Columbia Square. One of our favorite things about the Kehoe House is the daily wine and hors d’oeuvres reception and homemade cookies! The Kehoe House is also said to be haunted by children who once got trapped in the chimney. Guests have recalled hearing children playing in the halls when there is no one else around.

Where to get a drink: Moon River Brewing Co.

For a little downtime and a great local beer you’re going to want to head over to Moon River Brewing Co., which was founded in 1999. The brewery is located in one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Savannah. It was the first hotel in the city, and it was home to the first Savannah branch of the United States Post Office.

The selection of beer at Moon River Brewing Co. changes throughout the year, though there are some that are kept year round. One of our favorites is the Yoga Pants Pale Ale. It’s easy to drink and is super refreshing on hot southern days.

Where to eat: The Grey

One of Savannah’s more eclectic restaurants is found in a restored 1938 Greyhound Bus terminal. The Grey is focused on bringing diners regional produce, seafood and meats so each dish is of the highest quality. The menu is a little more upscale but still very approachable! One of the best things about The Grey is their diner bar. The menu is completely different from the main dining room but still just as delicious. Do not leave the diner bar without trying the chicken biscuit and gravy!

How to have some fun: Chippewa Square

One of Hollywood’s most famous movies was filmed in Chippewa Square. This is where Forrest Gump sits on a park bench to tell people who sit down next to him the story of his life. Most people know the scene where Forrest talks about life being like a box of chocolates. The actual bench from the film has been moved to the Savannah History Museum. Chippewa Square is still a great place for photos and to remember one of the greatest films of all time.
