Swamp Thing premiere preview: What lurks in the swamp

The series premiere for Swamp Thing is nearly here, and the ambiguous full trailer is a lot to handle.

In some form, horror is a major focal point of any DC Universe series. Whether it’s a tragic flashback, horrifying family drama, or just frightening villains, Titans, Doom Patrol, and even Young Justice: Outsiders all feature strong plights throughout the horror genre. As a newcomer to the streaming service, Swamp Thing continues that theme, and the trailers don’t even begin to describe the horrors ahead.

When it comes to Swamp Thing, there’s a lot to the lore, and how the series reimagines the comic mythos is part of the mystery. Before you cram through hundreds of comic issues before the series debut this Friday, we have an abridged version of everything you need to know ahead of the premiere. Of course, we definitely suggest that you test the waters of the various titular comic runs. We just don’t want you to rush through your reading experience.

Nevertheless, the other part of the mystery is the actual mystery itself, and the first official trailer details the twisted thriller.

Obviously, if suspense and horror aren’t your things, then you might want to skip out on Swamp Thing. However, you’re definitely missing out, especially with James Wan helming the series as an executive producer.

The trailer alone gives us glimpses into some pseudo-plantlike zombies, murder, and plenty of other nightmare-inducing imagery. While it reveals a lot of intense clips from the series, it gives us a lot of questions. And considering the lengthy comic history, Swamp Thing can easily surprise us well beyond its morbid trailers.

The vagueness of the trailer just bolsters our curiosity. Seeing as the fandom includes giant Elementals, an eco-centric plot, romance, and horror that extends well beyond this trailer, it seems like the DC Universe marketing department is intentionally heightening our imagination.

With how extra the first official trailer is, we’re not upset about it either.

It might appear like the horror supersedes the highly anticipated reveal of the protector of the Green, but the promo is just paying homage to one of the core elements of the fandom. We’ll just have to wait to see Alec Holland (portrayed by Andy Bean)  and Abby Arcane (portrayed by Crystal Reed) in all their glory when Swamp Thing premieres.

Swamp Thing debuts on DC Universe on Friday, May 31.
