Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger: Did “B Sides” just reveal a comic book villain?

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger revealed our big bad villain in this week’s episode and it came as a surprise. But there might be a tie to the Marvel comics.

This second season of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger has thrown some fun curveballs at us. This week’s episode is no exception, spending 90% of it inside of Tandy’s head.

One thing that was revealed? Our big bad villain for the season.

And before you jump to conclusions—no, the big bad is not the Thanos snap. In fact, Cloak and Dagger doesn’t even make mention of either Avengers film, which is fine. These stories could be taking place months before Infinity War. We don’t need to see either of our main characters turn to dust or a five-year time jump.

No, it’s not even Mayhem, who’s still stuck in the Darkforce dimension.

It was a fun twist even I didn’t see coming: Andre Deschaine, the community center leader (no relation to the Gunslinger). He’s the one spearheading the whole human trafficking ring.

As it turns out, he was in the water that night of the Roxxon explosion, the same one that gave Tandy and Tyrone their powers. He meant to kill himself but ended up with powers that suck the hope out of his victims.

So… did Cloak and Dagger just introduce the comic villain D’Spayre? It kind of sounds like it.

In the comics, D’Spayre is an ageless demon who was created using the fear and despair that emanated from the sinking of Atlantis and Lemuria. His powers include causing fear and despair in his victims using hallucinations. He also can read minds to bring out people’s deepest fears. He literally feeds off of their despair.

All of this sure sounds like Andre, just in a little more realistic setting. It’s a brilliant twist on the villain, if that is what Cloak and Dagger is setting up.

But what will defeat him? Will it be Mayhem with all of her anger and lack of hope and fear (since that’s all that’s left of Brigid)? Or will it by Tyrone, who also has a handle on people’s fears? Perhaps it’s an interesting tandem between them, one that might reunite Mayhem with her lackluster Brigid half.

Next week’s episode looks like it will revolve around Tyrone trying to rescue Tandy. We can only hope he gets there in time and finds a way to bring her hope back. And it’ll be interesting to see if Andre’s powers work on Tyrone or if it spirals them both into the Darkforce dimension.
