Game of Thrones: Will we see undead Starks during the Battle of Winterfell?
Go to the crypts, they said. It’d be safe, they said. This Sunday on Game of Thrones, we may very well see some undead Starks if a popular fan theory comes true.
With the Night King and his army heading towards Winterfell, there is a battle on the horizon on Game of Thrones. While there are some who might think the Battle of Winterfell will see the Starks coming out victorious, it is a lot more likely that this will be a major loss. In fact, one of the current theories has the Stark crypt being a major part of the fall of Winterfell.
Once the Night King’s army arrives at Winterfell, it seems likely that anyone hiding in the crypt or even already buried there may end up becoming part of the undead army. There are plenty in Winterfell who are currently alive who could end up becoming wights once the Night King gets his hands on them, but it’s those buried in the crypts that we’re most worried about.
As Newsweek points out, it is likely that there are hundreds of Stark ancestors buried in the Winterfell crypts, including Ned Stark, Rickon Stark, and of course Jon Snow’s mother, Lyanna Targaryen (who was originally a Stark).
Fans on social media have also picked up on this, realizing the crypts may not be the best place to be right now.
Right off the bat, we can totally see these three Starks becoming members of the undead army. And considering it requires fire to destroy a wight and even body parts continue to live on once converted, this means we could potentially see a headless Ned Stark roaming around.
We can’t imagine Arya or Sansa having to see their beloved family members come back to life. Recent previews though have shown a terrified Arya running through the crypts, and this may be why.
While the condition of the bodies of the dead Starks could cause problems for the Night King in transforming them into wights, that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. Plus if Rickon or Ned are brought back, we don’t feel they’d be the biggest threats.
After all, Rickon Stark is Ned’s youngest child, killed by an arrow, and not exactly the most threatening of all the Starks. And with Ned being headless, he doesn’t seem like a true threat either, even as undead Northerner stomping about.
Of course, these two are not the only dead Starks in the Winterfell crypts, but depending on how the dead are buried, it may not matter anyway. Whether or not this theory proves to be true, we’ll be watching the Battle of Winterfell with bated breath to see if Game of Thrones really does create an entire army of dead Starks, or if those seeking shelter and safety become the newest wights (please don’t let that little girl we saw last episode become a wight – please, please).
We will find out what happens at the Battle of Winterfell when Game of Thrones airs on HBO on Sunday night.
