Episode 8: “Triptych”
Oracle (Barbara Gordon) kicks off episode 8 with a strong start, and we’re ecstatic to see our favorite disabled hero with the Outsiders again. The start of the episode showcases Oracle’s detective abilities, which quickly lead into Dick Grayson’s own sleuthing skills.
As “Triptych” interjects with a new lead on the League of Shadows, the Outsiders pursue their search for Brion’s sister, Tara. If you’ve read the Teen Titans related comics, watched the titular animated series, or Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, then you can predict that Outsiders we’ll be walking on shaky ground during and well after they track down Tara.
Behind the tense foreshadowing, both with the assassin in the next episode, “Home Fires,” and likely later in the series, we’re grateful for Forager’s comic relief. We can definitely see why he’s the creators’ favorite character.
During the Outsiders’ mini-mission to find Cheshire (so they can find the League of Shadows), the show introduces some new villainous recruits: Mist, Livewire, Shade, and Mad Hatter. Mist’s struggle with Dick Grayson obviously foretells Jervis Tetch (Mad Hatter) and his role in nano-systems-based mind control.
Though she attempts to strangle Dick, she profusely apologizes to him. We still aren’t sure how Mist was cognizant of her actions despite her lack of autonomy. Her awareness about her less of bodily control could help the team find a way to reverse the mind control in the meta-human trafficking victims, in a less invasive way that is. (But that will require the team to find Mist again. )
However, Tetch’s mind control experiments could lead the team to some answers regarding how the syndicate is turning meta-humans into puppets. Granted, all the outlying teams and the Justice League can remain cooperative. Since the ending of the episode showcases continual conflict between the Outsiders and the Justice League, viewers can expect to see some conflict for the Outsiders beyond The Light.
