Star Wars Episode IX rumors: What are Kylo Ren’s plans?
Fan rumors and supposed spoilers for Star Wars Episode IX focus on what Kylo Ren might be doing as the Supreme Leader. Are they legitimate?
Star Wars Episode IX filming might be at least somewhat apparent — for example, we know that Jordan is the current filming location for at least a few cast members — but the plot is still effectively a mystery. Enter Express, picking up a supposed leak from YouTube. We’re not going to go that far and call it a rumor at best, because it sounds like a really terrible plan. (Express just says that it’s “grain of salt” level, but it’s below even that. We’re talking Crait levels of salt here at minimum.)
The rumor goes like this, allegedly coming from concept art. Express’ summary: “Kylo appears to be examining [in a hologram] three large superweapons that are in a cyllindrical [sic] shape with an enormous engine on each side of each superweapon of this ship/weapon, destroying terrain on a planet.”
As you might expect, Express then goes on to note that this basically sounds like a variation on the Death Star. That’s why it seems likely that it’s untrue. Although J.J. Abrams does, indeed, have a strong affinity for the original trilogy, and Lucasfilm hiring him again smacks of a desire to get things under control, the company still also let Rian Johnson make The Last Jedi. Moreover, a lukewarm response to the exceedingly safe Solo might make Lucasfilm’s story group gun-shy about bringing another familiar plot point back.
Aside from that, where did the First Order get the time to build this up? Then again, even the canon of Star Wars takes nearly 20 years to create the first Death Star, but by Return of the Jedi, the second Death Star is operational enough for the Emperor to pay a visit. Moreover, even though Kylo Ren doesn’t have a full-on Darth Vader “The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force” moment, he’s still been dismissive of the military might before. Could it be that he changes his mind in this film? Even though his use of the First Order’s strength at the end of The Last Jedi fails because it’s used against an illusion, it could only underscore his belief that the Force is going to be stronger anyway. As the new Supreme Leader, why would he spend more resources on something that has failed him before?
Besides, recall that this is coming from “concept art.” That means that things can change, and this could be early concept art, from a different draft of the film.
In other words, we’re not going to buy what Express is selling just yet. Kylo Ren is working from a level of personal vendetta, and even if there’s a jump between The Last Jedi and Episode IX, it probably isn’t enough to get him to grow up.
Goodness knows he hasn’t in his time in the galaxy yet.
