Black Lightning episode 8 review: 3 things we learned after The Book of Revelations
By Buckie Wells
After waiting several episodes for answers, Black Lightning finally explained who Gambi is and how Jefferson got his powers in “The Book of Revelations.”
Once last week’s episode of Black Lightning aired, we all knew that three major questions needed to be answered. Luckily, “The Book of Revelations” answered our biggest ones.
Of course, the episode packed in a lot more than just a few revelations. We spent most of our time watching adorable father/daughter superhero bonding as Jefferson trained Anissa to be more aware of her surroundings and gauge her powers. Once again, Black Lightning proved how much time it’s willing to invest in equal character development for all its characters, because we also saw Anissa teach her father a lesson or two.
Meanwhile, Lynn proved to be more than just a worried mother and transitioned perfectly into a valuable member of the support team. In fact, with even less clues than the audience, she was able to piece together what Gambi was hiding.
Last night’s episode also saw Jennifer begin to develop her powers. Like her sister, they seem to be triggered as a response to worry or fear.
But if you’re wondering how metahumans came about, here are three things we learned from Black Lightning‘s latest episode, “The Book of Revelations.”
Gambi
Gambi’s real name is Peter Esposito. He came to Freeland about 30 years prior as a member of a government organization known as the ASA. To quiet an otherwise politically-charged community, the ASA developed a drug that would help residents become more docile.

Metahumans
As speculated last week, the experiments and metahumans are basically the same thing. When the ASA distributed the drugs, they also accidentally created metahumans like Black Lightning as well. Obviously, Gambi tried to right his wrongs by leaking this information to Jefferson’s father, Alvin, but he was killed.
Exposure is the biggest threat
While Tobias Whale and LaLa still lurk in the background, another threat to Black Lightning (and his daughters) arrived in Freeland. According to Gambi, the ASA will do anything to keep their secrets under wraps, so they’ve sent one of their own to eliminate Black Lightning.

Green Light appears to work differently on people. It gave Black Lightning powers, which eventually became genetic traits that he passed on to his daughters. It also kept Tobias Whale alive and looking young. So, who else is out there and what other metahumans will we see soon?
Black Lightning airs new episodes every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
