Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: King’s Landing takes shape

It looks like the current area of focus for Game of Thrones fans might just have to be what’s going down in King’s Landing.

Warning: If you don’t like seeing Game of Thrones season 8 pre-filming (but definitely about ready for filming), this may not be the post for you.

If you want to know what’s going on with Game of Thrones season 8, trust local newspapers to dig up everything you need to know about production in their areas of coverage. Our sister site, Winter is Coming, found new images taken by the Dubrovnik Times — that’s Dubrovnik, Croatia — showing that the sets are about ready for things to really start happening.

So, let’s get into some theories based on these images. It appears that the director for whatever’s going on here is David Nutter, since he’s definitely in town. As WiC notes, he’s supposedly not directing anything past episode 4, but also has the first two episodes to handle.

As a result, whatever’s going on here probably doesn’t happen beyond the midpoint of the season. We say probably because, as of this morning, photos from News Dubrovnik appear to show Kit Harington actually in Dubrovnik — and possibly Emilia Clarke as well.

As r/freefolk has noted, one photo shows him with “strange men in black,” implying the possibility that it’s the Night’s Watch — or the last survivors thereof — accompanying him. Is this a last-ditch effort to get Cersei to actually help? Maybe they’re just members of Daenerys’ Queensguard or something. She has a better claim to the black color scheme than Cersei does.

It looks an awful lot like the blonde hair and the silver chain that basically define Daenerys Targaryen’s season 7 looks. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise for her to have the same in season 8, or at least early season 8.

However, earlier set photos make it seem as though, as WiC notes, Cersei is still queen:

It’s not impossible, however, that Nutter is filming scenes out of order — that is, it’s possible that parts of Dubrovnik are standing in for earlier episodes featuring King’s Landing, and Daenerys and Jon don’t arrive until whatever happens in episode 4. Then again, that banner does look awfully … sad … and possibly even burnt, wouldn’t you say?
