Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: The directorial breakdown
Which episodes of Game of Thrones’ final season are going to be must-watches, and which might inspire a little fear in the hearts of fans?
Warning: There are discussions of Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers below, including some information about directing.
Let’s face it: there are good directors for Game of Thrones, and there are bad directors for Game of Thrones. And, for the most part, there are pretty good directors lined up for season 8. However, Watchers on the Wall, citing Collider, now has exactly who is directing which episode.
Here’s the list:
- Episode 1: David Nutter
- Episode 2: David Nutter
- Episode 3: Miguel Sapochnik
- Episode 4: David Nutter
- Episode 5: Miguel Sapochnik
- Episode 6: D.B. Weiss and David Benioff
WOTW uses this information to speculate that Sapochnik will direct the episodes that involve the King’s Landing and Winterfell sets that have big battles/action moments in them. However, assuming that the fight for Winterfell comes first, wouldn’t it make more sense to put that earlier than halfway through the season?
Additionally, it would mirror the first truly large action sequence of season 7 appearing in episode 2 with the defeat of Daenerys’ fleet at the hands of Euron Greyjoy, both in terms of pacing and in plotting, since presumably whatever happens at Winterfell will take the form of a major blow dealt to a key player in the series.
We’re not saying that it’ll happen in the first episode, but if whatever happens at Winterfell is intended to get Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark, Bran Stark and Sansa Stark — or at least some of them — out and ready to move toward the endgame of the entire series (pun intended), with final confrontations and all, then episode 3 seems a little late for that and could result in some rushed pacing.

That’d be a less-than-ideal way to start the send-off for Game of Thrones. Whatever’s coming our way, though, we do know that we should prepare for hearts to be crushed. It’s been seven seasons. At some point you have to acknowledge that it’s probably coming.
