The La La Land director is executive producing and directing two episodes of The Eddy, a musical series set in a Parisian jazz club.

What if Ryan Gosling had followed Emma Stone to Paris at the end of La La Land and had found work at a local jazz spot? We’ll never know what would have happened, but it looks like the upcoming Netflix series The Eddy will give us a clue. Variety reports that Netflix has landed the series, from La La Land and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle. Set in Paris, The Eddy centers on a local club’s owners, employees, and house band. The series will be filmed in France.

Reflecting the racially and culturally diverse environment that is Paris, The Eddy will feature a multicultural cast and dialogue in English, French, and Arabic. The main focus of the eight-episode first season will focus on the partnership between the club’s co-owners, one of whom is American and one of whom is French-Arab.

The Eddy will be penned by This Is England writer Jack Thorne. The project will be composed by Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill”). Chazelle is among the series’ exec producers.

If you’ve been enjoying Netflix’s foray into European-set programming with series like The Crown (and now The Eddy), then you’re in luck: Netflix VP Erik Barmack says there is more where that came from. According to Variety, Netflix is developing series from France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Poland.

Personally, I’m excited for The Eddy because it sounds like a higher-budget, European alternative to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which is pretty much the current gold standard for TV musicals. Like The CW series, it seems like The Eddy is dedicated to telling a culturally inclusive story with characters who reflect the world we live in—which is especially welcome now, as the U.S. becomes increasingly xenophobic. Hopefully, it will also explore topics like gender, sexuality, and class, as Rachel Bloom and her team do in Crazy Ex.

And if The Eddy somehow manages to organically include a giant croissant, I would be eternally grateful.

Chazelle won an Oscar for his direction on La La Land earlier this year. His next film, the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, will see him reunite with La La Land leading man Ryan Gosling. Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, and Jon Bernthal are also attached to star.
