Talk about a galactic-sized tease. New Han Solo director Ron Howard has given fans a look at some of the costuming we’ll see in the film.
Han Solo, or possibly Solo, or at least the movie that stars Alden Ehrenreich and is part of the Star Wars spin-off series and is probably still coming out on May 25 next year, continues filming with Ron Howard at the helm now. Unlike set photos which appeared on the Internet earlier this week, these latest, non-set pictures come straight from Howard himself (and we tip our hats to io9).
io9 guesses that we’re looking at the costumes of Lando Calrissian in the following images, but that seems a little too obvious.
Of course, that isn’t a bad guess … but how exactly can Lando afford to have multiple fancy capes when he has a grand total of two in the original trilogy, despite being the head of a presumably profitable city when we first meet him and neither of which are quite as colorful as the prominent blue and red capes in the images?
After all, there are a lot of fancy capes to be had here.
Also, none of these capes seem to be Lando’s actual aesthetic. He doesn’t really do patterns when we meet him in The Empire Strikes Back or even in Return of the Jedi. Yours truly has actually gotten some Queen Amidala-type vibes off of the blue cape’s detailing. However, Buckie Wells goes for Leia instead. (I can’t disagree.)
Besides, the dudes of Star Wars never get quite so many costumes in one movie. It is a running point that that happens. We’re not saying that male main characters can’t have multiple outfits (fashion should have no limits). But when my colleague dubbed Howard’s hiring “safe,” what that means is we’re probably not going to see too many seismic shifts in the standard Star Wars aesthetic or costume distribution.
What would be cool is if this is the wardrobe of Emilia Clarke’s character. We don’t know much about her, other than that she’s “awesome” per Clarke herself. Capes are generally pretty awesome and dramatic.

And if Game of Thrones is any indication, Clarke knows how to wear some dramatically awesome clothing. Just saying, Ron Howard.
