What happened?

Where we last left off, Pope Pius XIII, a.k.a Lenny Belardo was elected to the highest office in the Catholic faith. But, he’s just shy of 50 years old, meaning the church could see this pope reign for close to four decades. Lenny (played by Jude Law) is weaving and dodging his way through the papacy so far, telling his followers that the new pope is in town, and he doesn’t intend on charting a smooth sailing course.

He’s going through a strained relationship with Sister Mary (Diane Keaton), who he brought on as his special adviser. She’s attempting to help him navigate the religious waters, but at this point, Lenny may be doing much more harm than good. He’s flipping Catholicism on its face by acting liberal but wanting to enact staunch conservative values. All the while, longtime pontiff adviser Cardinal Voiello (Silvio Orlando) is breathing down Pius XIII’s neck, hoping to unseat him as the world’s most holy man.

What’s next?

From the preview on HBO, we’re sure to have more interaction with Cardinal Michael Spencer, played by James Cromwell. Spencer was supposed to be pope, but the role, of course, went to Lenny. We’re not entirely sure what drama caused Lenny to be chosen over Spencer, but perhaps we’ll unfold that box tonight.

Lenny’s ruthlessness is starting to show as well. With the first homily out of the way, he can now concentrate on more pontiff-like duties. We’re sure to see if he handles them with the piety of his namesake, or he governs in a manner befitting only him. Don’t forget, we’ll be treated to two episodes per week until the series ends, so there’s sure to be a ton of interesting developments along the way.
