Scary Movie is revived: 4 modern horror movies the Wayans Bros need to parody
It seemed like we closed the door on the Scary Movie franchise. Created by the Wayans Brothers, the series was a parody of the popular scary movies at the time.
The original film: Scary Movie was released in 2000 and parodied the classic horror movies including Scream, The Sixth Sense, Friday the 13th and I Know What You Did Last Summer. After the success of the first, the fun continued.
Eventually, the studio took it all the way to Scary Movie 5 before stopping. By then, the franchise had lost most of its star power and it felt like the end was nigh. However, the Wayans Bros and Miramax had different plans as we're getting a rebooted version of the franchise.
Usually, reboots don't garner much excitement but given how horror movies can come out since then, I feel like we're in for a real treat. Due to that, there are certain horror movies I'd love to see the Wayans Brothers tackle.
These 4 modern horror movies need to be featured in Scary Movie.
1. Get Out
When it comes to modern horror, no one is doing it better than Jordan Peele. That's just a fact and his first one was Get Out. Following a Black man headed to meet his white girlfriend's family, we quickly find out that things aren't exactly as they seem. Given its impact, the film is one that many consider a modern horror classic yet no one seems to talk about how downright hilarious some of these scenes are.
Thankfully, I feel like the Wayans Brothers have the chance to parody Jordan Peele and do it right. If anything, I'm sure Peele is going to be honored they parodied his work. Peele has parodied a lot of things in his time, too and it would just be amazing to see. Plus we can trust the Wayans Brothers to make it funny without going over the top with it.
Get Out was the first film that came to mind yet the team could decide to go with Us or Nope. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if they chose to parody all three of Peele's projects. Either way, there was no way I wasn't including one of Jordan Peele's movies on my list.
2. The Terrifier franchise
Despite being a relatively new player in the horror genre, the Terrifier franchise has given us a new slasher everyone is talking about and that's Art the Clown. While I've personally never watched any of the films, I know that they're known for being incredibly gory and that Art doesn't talk so that leaves so much room for interpretation.
While the Wayans Brothers have featured clowns in the past installments, Art is something else entirely. At first, I waffled between putting Art or Pennywise on this list, but Art just feels like the better choice. Pennywise could have been featured in previous films but wasn't so Art the Clown might end up making the cut.
However, it's understandable if the Wayans Brothers don't want to tackle as new of a franchise as Terrifier. Either way, there was no way this one wasn't going to make my list.
3. M3GAN
Once again, this one might feel like an obvious pick, but I had to feature it and that's M3GAN. Oddly enough, this is another one featuring Allison Williams. Two films on the list? That's an interesting feat but this time, she's at least, trying to do what's best for her niece. After losing her parents, Gemma is sent to live with her Aunt Cady who gives her an AI doll that is incredibly human-looking named M3GAN.
While things start off fine, it's clear that M3GAN doesn't mess around when it comes to Gemma. She'll do anything and everything to ensure that they're going to stay friends forever. M3GAN isn't afraid to kill to get what she wants. Given all the talk about AI and how things can go awry, this movie felt like a warning more than anything.
There were also some funny moments sprinkled throughout M3GAN so I feel like the Wayans Brothers will have plenty of material to work with. I'm imagining just how unhinged that dance is going to be if it's featured in the upcoming Scary Movie flick.
4. A Quiet Place
Last but certainly not least, I had to feature another franchise I can see the Wayans Brothers wanting to tackle and that's A Quiet Place. The franchise started in 2018 and has since gone on to give us sequels and prequels. None of us imagined just how popular this franchise would become and how many movies it would spawn.
Looking at the Wayans Brothers' track record, there is a lot they can do with this premise. Whether it's who they decide to cast or how they play off of the concept, I'm just excited for it. Given how many movies are in the franchise now, I can only imagine the ideas that Wayans Brothers are cooking up.
Ultimately, there have been so many great horror movies released since Scary Movie first hit theaters and I can't imagine all the ideas the Wayans Brothers have. No doubt they're going to pay homage to some modern horror movies and the classics we all know and love.
Which horror movies would you like to see the Wayans Brothers feature in Scary Movie? Be sure to let us know!
