Will One Tree Hill's revival sink or swim?
Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton are joining the age of revivals, spinoffs, reboots, and sequel series with their own updated rendition of One Tree Hill. With plans to reprise their roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer, respectively, they are continuing Brooke and Peyton's stories in a Netflix sequel series that portrays the two women undergoing the trials and tribulations of being mothers to teenagers. Danneel Ackles, who portrayed Rachel Gatina, is also set to executive produce the reboot.
The concept of the sequel series has been growing in popularity for years, but will this one help add to the legacy of the original show's narrative or risk butchering everything fans were familiar with in a strive to start over?
When One Tree Hill concluded, Peyton and Lucas drove off into the sunset with their newborn child, putting an end to the six-season long will-they-won't-they love story that sat at the center of the series. Meanwhile, Brooke remained on the show until its conclusion, ending One Tree Hill's run married to Julian and the two of them having twins.
However, if Chad Michael Murray has no plans to return to the revival as Peyton's husband Lucas, then what does that mean for what became of Lucas and Peyton's relationship? Will the series reveal that they eventually divorced? Or, will the show take a more devastating approach to witness Peyton and her daughter, Sawyer, grieving the death of their respective husband and father?
While the concept of the revival storyline suggests the return of Brooke's twin sons, Jude and Davis, there has yet to be a confirmation from Austin Nichols that he will officially returning in a series regular capacity as Julian. So, that leaves questions up in the air for what could have eventually become of Brooke and Julian's relationship in the event that Austin Nichols is not interested in reprising the character as a series regular.
Fans were able to walk away from One Tree Hill feeling like their favorite characters, including beloved main couple Nathan and Haley, had gotten solid conclusions. So, does a revival put the original endings for these characters at risk?
Nathan and Haley had been the most integral relationship to arise from One Tree Hill, and thus, remains one of the biggest question marks in regard of if the revival chooses to reference them or leave them alone.
A sequel series, such as Cobra Kai, thrived in its ability to blend the past and the present and craft a story that is unique to its main teenage characters while still allowing its legacy characters, Daniel and Johnny, to grow and change within the show's narrative. Girl Meets World offered a sense of continuity and conclusion to certain character journeys, such as showing Cory and Topanga as parents and giving Shawn closure to his romance with Angela while giving him his happy ending with Katy.
At this point, it is not entirely certain who else from the original cast could be joining One Tree Hill's revival or what type of roles they could have. However, there is an element of rebirth in this concept as the original show's creator, Mark Schwahn, will not be involved in the sequel series. Previously, Mark Schwahn had been called out by One Tree Hill's original cast and crew for harassment and assault.
Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton's determination to take control of the show and create a safer environment for the cast and crew offers the chance for One Tree Hill to gain a new legacy. Given the changes the world has faced since the final episode aired in 2012 and how being a teenager has changed since the final days of the high school portion of the show concluded in 2007, there is a chance for this sequel series to embrace how the world has changed while keeping the series grounded in plot lines that adults can also relate to.
The growing world of social media has helped transform the coming-of-age experience. This new iteration of One Tree Hill has the opportunity to open the doors for various new storylines and ways of reaching out to the teenage audience while still offering its more grown-up audience who had watched the original series something to hold on to.
