SpongeBob SquarePants blasts into the future with his first 25th anniversary special: Watch the preview

Twenty-five years later, SpongeBob SquarePants is still making a splash. The quirky yellow underwater organism will still reside in his pineapple in the heart of Bikini Bottom, but he'll be living it up like it's 3099. Fans will experience SpongeBob's evolution, seeing a completely reimagined and "wet" personification and a supercool AI space getup.

It's SpongeBob, so any look he pulls off, whether successfully or epically fails, will become iconic and eventually, a meme. We're all about the SpongeBob memes, so bring them on.

Dropped as part of his 25th anniversary celebration, a new episode titled "PL-1413" premiered on Nickelodeon on July 15th at 4 PM EST. The special follows SpongeBob's nemesis and the show's antagonist, Mr. Plankton, as he visits Bikini Bottom set 2,000 years into the future. Much like his past character, Mr. Plankton is immensely annoyed by those he's not fond of, especially SpongeBob.

As per the title, "PL-1413" draws back to the classic season one episode, "SB-129" (originally aired in 1999), in which another one of SpongeBob's nemeses, Squidward, has a futuristic journey after being transformed into a frozen figure. We're not going to dive deep into the spoilers in case you haven't yet watched, but Squidward's reactions to an advanced Bikini Bottom are hilarious and stay true to his character arc.

TVLine was the first to get a sneak peek of "PL-1413," where Mr. Plankton visited SpongeBob in his "icy" form. You can see the clip below!

"PL-1413" comes right after SpongeBob and Patrick Starr hosted the Kids' Choice Awards on July 13th, the first time the ceremony has ever had an animation host rather than a celebrity. The change in this unique format was met with positive reviews, as the duo provided laughs and amplified the year-long 25th-anniversary celebration.

What's more, "PL-1413" is one of the first of several specials highlighting SpongeBob's significant milestone in pop culture history and will continue to absorb even greater success in the years to come.
