The CW Network under Nexstar Media has been fairly cutthroat with its shows as the new owners strive to bring in money. Not only was that shown when the network canceled most of its list of scripted shows, but also when it decided to cut down the number of episodes that each continuing series would be able to air, and even when it forced All American: Homecoming to release several actors from its list of series regulars.

So, the announcement that The CW Network has extended All American's season six run by two episodes is fairly surprising, even given the show's popularity on the network. But, while it may be suggesting a positive future for All American, and the potential for a seventh season, that does not mean that the series will look exactly the same if The CW Network does decide to renew the football drama.

As Spencer's dream of reaching the NFL grows closer, that would narratively bring a close to Spencer's main narrative in the series. To expand the show to follow Spencer, and potentially Jordan, to the NFL, while also trying to keep up with the rest of the show's existing series regulars would be highly ambitious.

There is a chance that All American's plan to keep costs down would involve bringing in a new slew of actors to help keep the story going. But would that mean getting rid of many members of the show's already established and popular cast?

To get away with such a massive change, All American would need to go about it carefully in a way that prevents the show from feeling disconnected, as Glee had fallen into that trap years ago when it attempted to follow characters in different states with storylines that had no connection to each other.

Season six may be laying the ground work as Spencer has started spending more time around Crenshaw High School with a student who is being described as being the next Spencer James. The next generation could be what keeps All American afloat. But, before Spencer passes the torch onto a potential new group of series leads, All American needs to make sure to tie up the loose ends of the already existing series regulars.

Does the audience get to witness Jordan and Layla's wedding that keeps getting references throughout season six? Spencer has already revealed his intentions to join the NFL Draft, but will Jordan follow his lead? What will become of Layla's business venture? What transpires due to Olivia's book about Billy? What type of lawyer due Coop become? Do Coop and Patience get back together? Does Asher break into coaching after graduation?

All American has too many story threads that its characters and audience deserve to get closure to before the show moves on to focus on other characters and storylines.
