What really happened to Roman has been one of the main subplot storylines of High Potential's first season. Although the series remains mostly a mystery-of-the-week format, this subplot played a key role in Morgan's agreement to join Major Crimes. The main unsolved mystery in Morgan's life has her questioning where her former life partner went, seeing as she was never able to truly believe that he had abandoned her and their young daughter. After a season of small strides as the storyline blended in and out of the overall picture, the season one finale, "Let's Play," finally gives more headway into Roman's disappearance in the most mystery-heavy episode yet.

"Let's Play" starts out as any other episode of High Potential has so far, with a mysterious threat that the detectives have to track down to either solve a murder or save a life. But, once Morgan, Karadec, and their team find their first kidnapped victim still alive within the episode's first ten minutes, it is clear the audience is in for a ride. "Let's Play" is a cumulative effort of everything season one has worked up to so far, portraying the intricate trust and friendship between Morgan and Karadec, the growing Roman enigma, and the portrayal of this group of detectives working together to solve dangerous mysteries. However, given its role as a season finale, High Potential chooses to rely on a cliffhanger rather than wrapping everything up in a neat bow, and this decision works quite well. "Let's Play" introduces a new potential Big Bad for Morgan while revealing the twists that not only is Roman alive, but he has been working as an FBI informant.

Season one did a fine job of weaving the Roman plot in and out of the episodes, as the series focuses primarily on Morgan's relationships with her co-workers at Major Crimes and her family at home. However, especially with the cliffhanger, the mystery and disappearance of Roman needs to become more of a forefront storyline of season two. While the show's first installment of episodes beautifully displays its weekly mystery format and connections between the characters, moving forward, Roman can not take a backseat to the ongoings of the show all season, especially after such a massive revelation about his character. Granted, the suggestion that Morgan now has her own personal Big Bad is also a dangerous distraction from the regular weekly activities, and the question remains: how long will he be out in the world before he is eventually caught?

Ultimately, "Let's Play" was a captivating season one finale. In the end, it gives the characters a strong narrative and motivation moving into season two, which allows them to have something to focus on the moment season two arrives on ABC. Between the fun character dynamics and balance between comedy and seriousness, this show portrays an exciting mix for any viewer. In the end, High Potential continued to prove that a lighthearted, thrilling mystery series is a strong contender in the television landscape.
