Review: CBS knocks it out of the park with Price is Right Bob Barker Tribute

Just days following the death of legendary game show host Bob Barker, CBS announced and aired a 1-hour primetime Price is Right tribute. The special touched on Barker’s life showcased some of his most memorable moments on the Price is Right, and overall took his fans and PIR fans on a trip down memory lane.

Drew Carrey hosted the special, and it was done very similar to a regular episode of the Price is Right, he became emotional near the end while signing off, and the feeling was mutual from many viewers at home. Moreover, one aspect that was stressed throughout the show was Barker thanking the audience for allowing him into their homes for over 30 years. Barker’s job came with great privilege and the level of gratitude that was expressed was as refreshing as it was genuine.

Barker lived to age 99 and was only a few months shy of the big 100, Someone wrote on Twitter the day his death was revealed he lived as close to 100 without going over, if you are a Price is Right watcher, the reference is very fitting.

Barker’s infamous sign-off on The Price is Right was when he would urge the viewers at home to please spay and neuter their pets. The message was deeper than just an effort to help control the pet population, it spoke to Barker’s strong passion for animals. During the special it was revealed, that during one of Barker and Carrey’s final meetings before he took the reins of the show, Barker was planning to ask Carrey if he would continue to utter the phrase at the end of every show before he could ask; Carrey assured him he would keep up the tradition.

All in all, the world lost yet another iconic gameshow host, after Alex Trebek passed away in 2020 at the age of 80. Despite Barker’s advanced age, it doesn’t make the loss hurt less. For many years, regardless of uncertainly Barker was there hosting The Price is Right, it felt like he would always be around in one way or another until he wasn’t. Rest in Paradise Bob Barker.
