Kristin Davis came close to playing Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City
Kristin Davis is famous for playing Charlotte York on the hit HBO series Sex and the City. There was nobody better to play the conservative art gallery dealer, who strived to find true love. Charlotte went through many hardships before finding happiness with her husband Harry Goldenblatt and their daughters Lily and Rose.
Davis play Charlotte for six seasons and reprised her role in two Sex and the City films. In 2021, she reunited with her co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon for the HBO Max revival And Just Like That…
But if things had worked out differently 25 years earlier, Davis could’ve played a different role in the series.
Sex and the City producers initially wanted Kristin Davis as Carrie Bradshaw
When Candace Bushnell’s popular book Sex and the City was adapted into a TV series, producers searched for the right actress for Carrie Bradshaw. The producers wanted Parker for the role of the fashionista sex columnist but didn’t know if she was available.
The show’s creator Darren Star reached out to Davis, who he previously worked with on Melrose Place. Star thought Davis would be a good fit for Carrie and asked her to audition. However, Davis had concerns after reading the script.
In an interview with And Just Like That…The Writers Room podcast, Davis revealed her reaction upon learning about Carrie’s personality.
"“In the original script, Carrie was much more like Candace. She smoked and she swore. And I remember one line in the script, it said ‘Carrie has the body of Heather Locklear and the mind of Dorothy Parker.’ I was like, ‘That is adorable, but I can’t play that part!'”"
While she turned down the Carrie role, Davis believed she was a better fit for Charlotte and convinced Star to let her audition. Davis was cast as Charlotte and Parker eventually accepted the role of Carrie. And the rest as they say is history.
