CBS has officially renewed So Help Me Todd for a second season. The legal drama beautifully mixes in the comedy that it needs to add layers to the story and characters beyond the mystery at hand and the growing family drama.

So Help Me Todd follows the mother-son relationship between Margaret and Todd when Margaret gives Todd a job at her law firm to help him get back on his feet after everything he worked so hard for fell apart.

But, while Margaret and Todd are the main characters, and their relationship rests as the heart of the series, they are not the only integral members of the show. So Help Me Todd also delivers a solid supporting group of characters, including Margaret’s daughter, Allison, a doctor at a hospital; Lyle, Todd’s antagonistic co-worker; and Susan, another co-worker who also happens to be Todd’s ex-girlfriend.

The first season has delivered on various complex relationships outside of Todd and Margaret. Allison’s relationship with Margaret has its own ups and downs, as do Todd and Allison’s relationships with their brother. Allison’s troubled feelings toward her relationship with her husband also receive some screen time.

Todd also reunited with Veronica, the woman who had single-handedly ruined Todd’s life before the show’s events.

By renewing So Help Me Todd, CBS has given the characters more space to grow and develop. While the circumstances of each crime Todd and Margaret must face may be severe, the series perfectly balances the humor in their relationship and trying to solve the case. This is not just another legal drama with the weight of the world on everyone’s shoulders.

Instead, adding comical elements allows the series to deliver interactions that feel relatable to families. Of course, no one’s relationship is perfect, but working together or seeing each other constantly certainly helps to change the dynamic, whether it be positively or negatively.
