“Lazarus” finally reveals the interior of the mysterious building and explains its purpose in 10,000 B.C. After several episodes leading up to this moment, Gavin enters the building, which also results in him meeting the man who runs it, James, who also happens to be Gavin’s father.

James explains he had dreamt up the building when he discovered Caroline was pregnant. He wanted to create a better world for his son, one where the planet was not dying in 2076, the actual time Gavin is from.

However, Caroline, Aldridge, Silas, and James eventually saw things differently, with Gavin being raised by Silas not that far away, but hidden, in 10,000 B.C while Caroline and Aldridge each left the project as well.

“Lazarus” does not reveal the full scope of the events between the foursome, only hinting that James was meant to be the problem that eventually was the catalyst for the split.

James’ plan for 10,000 B.C was to help heal the planet in the future by taking natural resources from the past. At least, that is what he claimed it was. If La Brea wants to hint that James should be seen in a more villainous light, perhaps there is more to the equation than saving the future. Since James lied to Gavin throughout the episode about where the time portal was capable of going, there is always a chance he lied about more or omitted more of the truth.

Of course, the love triangle between Eve, Gavin, and Levi continues to play as a subplot, with Levi witnessing how far Eve is willing to go to reach Gavin after they are separated. While it does not confirm Eve’s eventual decision one way or another, Izzy even tries to save Eve and Gavin’s relationship by telling Levi to back off because Gavin and Eve need space to work things out.

In 1988 “Lazarus” shows Josh, Riley, and Caroline hard at work to prevent a sinkhole in Santa Monica that could result in a massive tidal wave that could likely lead to many casualties. However, when Caroline is taken, Josh and Riley are left to figure out how to save the local population. But, when Caroline leaves something behind, Riley and Josh may not know how to use it, but Sam would.

Luckily, Sam’s teenage self happens to live and work in the area, and Riley succeeds in giving him a message that the adult Sam gains in 10,000 B.C, telling him exactly where he should meet Riley and Josh in 1988.

That memory, mixed with finally getting inside the mysterious building, leads to the moment they have all been waiting for. The Harris family and Riley and Sam are finally reunited. It is a thrilling reunion as all of them have been waiting for this. However, there is still more danger lurking.

They still have a sinkhole and tidal wave to stop and the potential to even prevent all future sinkholes from occurring. Meanwhile, although everyone is back together, they are still stuck in 1988 until they can figure out how to return to 10,000 B.C or the year they came from.
