Eve has numerous things to be concerned about during “The Heist.” For starters, Eve, along with Gavin and Izzy, are anxiously awaiting to be reunited with Josh. To do that, Eve must go on a quest with Gavin, Izzy, and Sam to take control of the delivery of black rocks to the mysterious building.

However, it is not as easy as they would hope. The four quickly fall through a trap door and end up underground in the caves, attempting to outrun spiders and make their way out of the closed-off tunnels. Unfortunately, their escape plan eventually results in the foursome knocking the villagers unconscious to steal their clothes and take their wagon.

While the whole group, including Levi, Scott, and Lucas, eventually make it to the mysterious building, that is not the only conflict Eve has to deal with. Eve’s relationships with Izzy, Gavin, and Levi take an emotional forefront as Ty suggests Eve quickly figure out how to handle the situation before prolonging it causes everyone more pain.

Gavin declares he will do whatever it takes to show Eve that they are still good for each other and deserve another chance to keep their family together. Izzy also makes her opinion quite clear, wanting her parents to get back together and not seeing the emotional struggle Eve is going through.

Eve and Gavin understand they both made mistakes and that it would take time to grow back together if they managed to. However, Eve must also determine how her feelings for Levi fit into the equation.

Gavin and Levi may not be fighting over Eve, but their approach to the situation still has emotional drawbacks, such as the two of them not entirely talking things out. Gavin determines that the most important thing is getting Josh back, and everything else will be dealt with later. But, before they can do that, the group must get inside the building without a solid understanding of precisely what they need to do.

That might be where Josh and Riley’s side of the story becomes more significant. Of course, being stuck in 1988 has had its advantages, but perhaps none more than being stuck in the same time as Dr. Caroline Clark, Josh’s biological grandmother.

Riley and Josh’s conversation with Caroline leads to another unexpected plot twist: Caroline and Gavin are from the future. Gavin had not been born in 10,000 B.C, but some time in the future. “The Heist” portrays Caroline’s wish to reunite with her son, but in the end, she does not change the timeline.

Instead, based on Josh’s statements that Isaiah grows up to be Gavin Harris, Caroline figures out exactly which family her son is meant to end up with. Caroline follows through on that, ensuring Gavin’s future.

But, while seeing a young Gavin get adopted started the steps that would eventually lead him to Eve, the 1988 storyline’s most significant factor is the reveal of future events.

Caroline revealed that there were numerous issues in the future that she had come back in time to prevent. Time travel is now playing a massive role in the story, as well as its capabilities and what it could mean for everyone.

Otherwise, La Brea takes the opportunity to develop Lucas and Scott’s friendship further while devoting more time to understanding Scott’s history with anxiety. Leaning on his vape as a crutch, when it runs out, Scott must face the world without the thing that has calmed him down. But maybe that no longer needs to be his crutch.

Scott’s friendship with Lucas, and the development of understanding that Scott has grown since his brother’s tragic death, may be enough to show that Scott can participate in saving his loved ones and avoiding unnecessary deaths.

“The Heist” is a big episode as a lead-up for things to come. It sets up several things that will be useful in future episodes while preparing the audience for the inevitable trip inside the mysterious building. Meanwhile, it does not let Josh and Riley’s excursion in 1988 go to waste, even though they are isolated from the rest of the main characters.
