Disney’s D23 Expo took place this weekend and Wildcats everywhere finally got the news they have been waiting for. High School Musical is coming back with a fourth installment of the film’s franchise – sorta. Get this.

Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, Matt Cornett, and Dara Reneé, stars of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, announced that there will be a High School Musical 4 within the series.

The upcoming season, which currently has no release date, finds Miss Jenn & Co. staging a production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Not only that, but the students learn that the original High School Musical cast will reunite at East High to film High School Musical 4: The Reunion and they’ll be on hand to play extras.

While the series has welcomed stars of the original series for guest appearances, including Corbin Bleu, KayCee Stroh, and Lucas Grabee, there was no announcement as to which cast member of the original franchise will make a return.

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens however, if you remember, were spotted at East High earlier this year While the stars posted images with the iconic film set on social media, the posts didn’t come together or at the same time. Were they just visiting then?

With so many questions up in the air, fans may have to wait till 2023 to learn the direction the series will go. The third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series hit Disney+ in July 2022. If the past seasons prove anything, it looks like we will have a summer release.

Showrunner Tim Fedele told Seventeen: “Ultimately, it’s High School Musical. I think you’ll always see them do a musical, but we’re always trying to find a surprising new way to do that.”

We’re loving this direction.
