How I Met Your Father: Season 1 finale leaves romantic cliffhangers
Hulu’s How I Met Your Father concluded its first season by leaving cliffhangers for many of its central couples. Each romance hit a struggle in the season 1 finale, as many struggled to reach the same page about something.
Following up on “Jay Street,” Sophie is waiting for a late Jesse to appear for their date, even though she believes he may have stood her up. However, the finale quickly rectifies that when Jesse rushes to the table, apologizing for being late and explaining an incident on the train, which resulted in him running the remainder of the way to the restaurant.
However, How I Met Your Father also makes sure to avoid prolonged or drawn-out lies. Sophie already knew that Jesse had gone to speak to Meredith about her new song, and Jesse did not bother lying about seeing her. Jesse is open and honest, revealing he needed closure after hearing Meredith’s new song. Speaking with her gave him the closure he needed from that relationship, and he is ready to move forward with Sophie.
Unfortunately, their good time only lasts one night. When Jesse mutters a confession of love in his sleep, Sophie panics, unsure how to handle the situation. But, once again, How I Met Your Father does not make Sophie’s uncertainty too drawn-out, nor does she lie about it to Jesse. Instead, the next time they meet, Sophie confronts him about it directly, telling him what he had said in hopes they can address it.
Although Jesse is embarrassed it happened, he does not take back his statement when Sophie laughs it off. They have been friends for a while, and although it may be a little soon in a new relationship to reveal such a thing, Jesse admits that he sees no issue with his feelings. He even acknowledged that he had no interest in getting back together with Meredith or going on tour with her because of what was happening between him and Sophie.
Jesse’s confessions send Sophie spiraling, and uncertain of if she wants to stick around and talk or run away, Sophie ends up at a local bar to confront her feelings. Luckily, she gets a little help in the form of How I Met Your Mother alumn, Robin Scherbatsky.
Robin references her history to help Sophie work through her conflicting emotions. Jesse may have spoken too soon, but did he do anything wrong? As Sophie and Robin dissect Sophie’s emotions, Sophie concludes that she needs to talk to Jesse. However, it is easier said than done.
When Sophie returns to Jesse’s apartment, he is cozy with Meredith, and rather than interrupt them to get answers, Sophie leaves to see her work displayed at the art gallery. However, the final moments suggest that Sophie’s romantic life may be getting more complicated as Ian re-enters the picture.
However, Sophie’s friends are also facing romantic conflicts as well. Valentina and Charlie’s relationship has been up and down throughout season 1, but the finale reveals an element that changes things.
Valentina and Charlie realize they have one very distinct difference. While Valentina wants children, Charlie does not. Valentina and Charlie’s break-up stems from this difference in perspective and hopes for the future.
Moving forward, this is now something they know about each other, which could affect how their dynamic moves forward. Will Valentina and Charlie’s relationship remain platonic moving forward if neither changes their mind?
As for Sid and Hannah, they spend the season 1 finale under constant stress regarding planning two weddings. On top of that, they are dealing with what it would mean to be in a long-distance relationship for another year. When meeting up with everyone to celebrate Sophie’s photography achievement, Sid and Hannah reveal that to save finances and avoid more wedding planning, the couple had secretly and quickly been married at City Hall.
However, even though the couple has gotten married, Sid and Hannah’s most significant conflict may still be in play. Planning a wedding from opposite sides of the country may have been difficult, but part of their struggles came from having a long-distance relationship and how little they could see each other.
Being married but still likely living on opposite sides of the country suggest that Sid and Hannah may still have the same struggles they did before, just without the added stress of planning a wedding.
How I Met Your Father has left plenty of loose ends for the second season to pick up on and expand.
